    Fire - finding wood!!

OK, so I'll answer your question - I take it with me.

    Fire - finding wood!!

And what would one of those be, then? Personally I would never describe myself as that. I would call myself 'a walker who likes to do things the old way every now and then, but just as likely to do it a modern way.' You can read those Four Seasons articles on the front page to get an idea of...

    Fire - finding wood!!

/\ That If you get to where you want to camp and there's no wood left then take the hint - it's been over foraged. The wood is not there just for you to burn. Broch said it all so I won't repeat. But no sympathy from me either, I'm afraid.

    Bats

It's a bloody good question though! Get your answers in early, everyone. I'm going to suggest it has something to do with heat.

    Bats

Yes, swallows are more graceful, faster, acrobatic. But sometimes too fast, and too predictable for that speed. Bats though, like you say, have more of that 'I can't believe I'm flying!' vibe about them. Like those big fat bumblebees improbably wobbling through the air. And that's why I find...

    Cheese With Hot Dog?

Brown sauce is the work of Satan. People who like brown sauce are the same kind who put milk in before the water when making tea. Both are just inexcusable. Like the idea of a dash of tabasco though.

How do you start your fires?

    Nope.

How do you start your fires?

A timely question. I very rarely have a fire but when I have, recently, I've been a bit lazy - using a chunk of hexi block and a lighter to get it all going. It's made me decide that next time, whenever that may be, I'll take a flint and steel and char cloth to keep skills honed.

What bit of your kit is a keeper?

So it's not a keeper then, surely? ;) Interesting to see the number of frying pans, and cooking utensils in general, being mentioned. I'm another frying pan owner. Mine was nothing special - £1.49 from Wilko donkey's years ago. Yet I've cooked more meals in that pan than anything else in my life.

    Cheese With Hot Dog?

I've tried vegetarian sausages and burgers. They tasted just like pre-chewed cardboard. Even when I was a vegetarian I couldn't abide them. Never really got my head around why vegetarian food tries to masquerade as a meat equivalent. If you go to India you'll eat food so gorgeous that the...

    Cheese With Hot Dog?

I must confess to being surprised to see the scores so evenly split. OK, so I was on the 'no cheese with a hot dog' side of the debate. In fact, apart from those German sausage stalls you see at Christmas markets that sell sausages stuffed with cheese, I'd never seen anyone had cheese with a...

    Cheese With Hot Dog?

Sorry for this. But having a barbecue this evening and a debate (and, since we're talking barbecues, it's an 'intense' debate) has erupted about whether one should have cheese in a hot dog. We're not talking burgers. It's hot dogs. What do I mean by hot dogs? Well, I'm encompassing the whole...

    Skittles

Oh, I thought this was going to be about the sweets. You could pimp me out for Skittles and Wine Gums. But as it is, those just look fantastic. How tall are they? I reckon they'd make a good garden game.

    And sometimes ……..

What I like most about grey squirrels, and what I'm most thankful to them for, is that they provide a continued challenge and test for me. You see, in theory, I believe all animals have their place and niche in the biosphere. I object to terms such as 'pest' and 'non-native' - borders are...

Sorry, Coedwigwr, I missed that bit. My apologies. Yes, in that case, it is an essential item!

    Kit weight

Don't be too keen to get rid of all of it. You've some good stuff there, all of which has its use. But it seems that, from your original post, you were taking too much all at once. I'd keep that tent/bivvy if I were you. Come the inclement weather it will have a use. Or maybe you're somewhere...

    Kit weight

Yes, that does look a good set up. Couple of observations regarding your original query about weight. This time of year, in this weather, I'm not sure I'd bother with a tent. Also, I see you've got a gas stove - which does make me wonder why you want to take an axe and saw. I assumed it was for...
