    Climate Change & Survival.

Man Friday - OK, so your motivation is to inform so people can take appropriate action. Yup, fair enough. Have you done that yet? How's it going for you? Has it gone how you thought it would? Because, whilst I am not entirely on your side, neither am I entirely against it. I think I lie...

    Climate Change & Survival.

Man Friday, what is it you are trying to achieve with these posts? That's a genuine question. What is it you are wanting from readers of this thread/forum?

    Climate Change & Survival.

In complete fairness, Toddy, I think you are over-doing the Panglossian approach to this, in the same way Man Friday is over-doing the doom and gloom scenario. Both are starting to look just as risible. The sensible approach is somewhere in between the two.

    Climate Change & Survival.

Then for the sake of you own mental health, your own self-esteem, and (just as importantly) that of the people around you and who you love and care for, do not describe yourself a 'doomer' (because it seems you're not), do not allow other people to label you (who gives a damn what names...

    Climate Change & Survival.

Purely philosophical question this. But if, as a self-confessed 'doomer' (what a way to describe oneself!) who believes we are 'doomed' with no hope, why do you continue raise awareness? What difference will it make? You outline the actions you take to save the climate, but why? As a 'doomer'...

    Climate Change & Survival.

Hopefully. Though there is a good number of people who think because where they live it's been raining, or because it's been a cooler Summer (so far - next week the forecast is for temperatures up to 30C in the south east) than previous years, that the whole climate change thing is utter...

    Climate Change & Survival.

Really? Did you not hear on the news about the weather in southern Europe and the problems they were having? Are you not aware of the heat crisis taking place in Asia? Big thought for you: the climate is bigger than just your back yard.

The "What is this bug?" thread

I think we have a winner! Likes chalk soil, sits on dung, eats grasshoppers (there were loads about)... And funnily enough, when I first glimpsed it, the first thought I had was, 'Ooo...was that a hornet?'

The "What is this bug?" thread

Out for a walk today and saw this hangover from the time of the dinosaurs: Anyone know what it is? I wondered if it was a cicada. But doesn't look like one when I checked online. It's about 35/40mm long. It was seen today, south east UK, on chalk heath/downland. In the picture it's sitting on...

Seriously? Whilst I am in full agreement that some posters on this thread should be taking Sertraline twice a day, you are displaying a pretty woeful knowledge of how the climate works. So bad, in fact, I'm left dumbfounded and really can't think of anything to say to you in response.

    Dawn redwood (Metasequoia)

Sorry, but there is quite a bit of truth. For starters: https://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/blog/2019/05/invasive-species/ https://besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1046/j.1365-2664.2000.00538.x https://www.wcl.org.uk/the-impact-of-inns-on-trees-and-woodlands.asp There's lots more out...

    Dawn redwood (Metasequoia)

It may, of course, have no detrimental effect on the habitat. Equally so, it absolutely may. You have no way of knowing that and once the damage is done...well, it's too late to say, 'oops, looks like I was wrong.' Introduction of non-native species is one of the key elements of the...

    Dawn redwood (Metasequoia)

Sorry, you're being short-sighted. It most certainly DOES add up. That tree will not support the wildlife surrounding it as well. It will have an impact. Equally, it will leach, and suck up, nutrients that may adversely affect plants in the immediate area. And that will knock on to affect those...

    Dawn redwood (Metasequoia)

Arguably, that doesn't make it right. The fashion for decorative and exotic trees is a 19th century one where they neither knew (nor cared) so much about biodiversity. Again, maybe. But I would be a lot happier if one grew (for example) something like willow or alder to soak up that excess...

    Dawn redwood (Metasequoia)

Sorry to be the buzzkill, but if I may be allowed to take the role of the other side of your conscience, may I suggest that you avoid growing non-native species? It is better for the bio-habitat and the support of wildlife to grow native species (wherever you may be) because that is the...

    Tarp and wood stove combo

With a tarp I'm not sure you'd need a wood burning stove that requires a flue panel. It's open enough as it is. Instead I would use some kind of collapsible fire box. A Honey Stove or something like that (plenty of cheaper alternatives out there) rather than a heavy (and expensive) wood burner...

    Belgian laavu ?

That looks a simple enough mod. I rarely use my Polish ponchos/lavvu because...well, because they aren't that good really, are they? They certainly look the part though. And when I'm in the mood for that look out they come. But I'm always frustrated by the slight lack of size. That extension...

    What are you currently reading?

Been reading a lot of good books recently. Finished 'The Spanish Civil War' by Paul Preston (a good one-volume history), then 'Ethan Frome' by Edith Wharton (no, I'm not turning into an old spinster aunt), then 'To Kill A Mocking Bird' by Harper Lee (I know, I can't believe I'd not read it...
