    Long term foraging

Very practical :) and tasty :) I reckon that's how farming began; folks just slowly moved stuff to someplace convenient. Seeds, a root or two, put it in where you'll pass it later when it's cropping :)

    What did you forage today?

Watch the plantain and get the seeds before they spill. They'll thicken a stew....bit like a native version of chia seeds :)

    A Rare Find

Those sleeping bags, and feather quilts, dry really well in industrial tumble driers. They're so big that the bag/quilt just sort of floats around in the hot air, and the feathers fluff up beautifully :)

    Daily Supplementation

If you like smoothies, then buy the dried powder and mix it up. It makes up like a stock/tea easily too. I buy a lot of dried powdered veg from Wholefoods online, https://www.buywholefoodsonline.co.uk/beetroot-powder.html but there are other companies too. Summer Solstice, and there's a knock...

    What did you forage today?

Heartsease (the wild pansy) selfheal, lemon balm, rosenoble (figwort), bittercress, wild strawberries, and I cut and have laid out to dry, the leaves from the iris that I favour for cordage and basketry. I am also most displeased. I was weeding under the Rowan tree and was bitten by something...

    Firewood pests and solutions…

Should have burned the timber and let the smoke deal with it all :)

    Weather to come.......

Me too. I dug out a hot water bottle last week, and I've been using it. I'm not supposed to get suntanned so I bought the UV protective sleeves, they're still in the packet. I'm still wearing cardigans over my frocks. Found Son2 rooting through the linen cupboard last night for an extra quilt...

    Firewood pests and solutions…

I don't know; but I do know that the roofs of roundhouses, that were filled with smoke...they don't have chimneys, the smoke from the central hearth billows up into the cone and sort of seeps through the thatch, but mostly spills downwards and out at the eaves.....are pretty much insect proof...

    Limited Canned Goods.

Any supermarket carries it in the Indian foods section. It comes in really neat tin. East End or KTC are common brands.....about £6 for a 500g tin which does a lot of cooking. Kg tins are around £11 but really unless you're using it often that tin's a bit large for a small family. Coconut oil...

    Limited Canned Goods.

Olive oil keeps well if kept cold and sealed. So does British grown and made Rapeseed. Ghee keeps for years in cans, so does Nido which is the full fat dried milk, but tins of condensed or evaporated milk last very well too. I'd add honey to the list.

    Limited Canned Goods.

Good flour, kept well, just bleaches whiter. Wholemeal doesn't keep so well. Rice keeps for years and years. So does dried pasta. Instant mash comes sealed in mylar sachets and keeps for years too. Tesco, Sainsbury's Morrison's, Asda, all about a pound a box of two sachets.....I make potato...

    Green energy :D

I don't, but I use the greenhouse all year round. It's cold here, and it's a safe place to stash plants that are a wee bit tender through Winter. Doesn't mean that I don't tend to them though, and honestly, eight hours of daylight is not enough to get everything done. So, light, easily...

    Green energy :D

Wind turbines are noisy, even the wee ones stuck up on lamp posts or clothes poles are noisy....yet my wind spinner ornaments are pretty quiet. I once started a quilt, with a small block made every day of the weather of that day...I started it on the 1st of January and by the end of February I...

Ian - 'fast but dim' RIP

I am sorry to hear he's away. Kind of shocked to be honest; he was a member for as long as I was, and I liked his posts. Far too young; sincerest condolences to his family and friends.

    Green energy :D

No, I think it's valid, but then I live with wind. It is very rare for us to have 'no' wind. It's not rare for us not to see that hot yellow ball thing in the sky for weeks on end....and I wasn't joking about there only being eight hours of daylight when it 'might' be available. We all have...

    Green energy :D

But not at night....and we have at most eight hours of light in Winter....that's a long time dark.
