    Favourite type of sausage

It's strange, you often never really appreciate something until you don't have it any more. When I lived in the Netherlands I really missed a proper British banger. Sure you can get something Sausage shaped from AH, or from the Butchers, but it just wasn't the same as proper British banger...

    Nessmuk

I see quite a few threads talking about "nessmuks", which appear to be some form of knife. I notice several custom knife makers making some form of nessmuk knife, but as a bit of a blade novice, I've been wondering. What exactly is Nessmuk? where do they originate from? and what are they...

    Spruce root cordage

I'm interested in having a play with spruce root cordage, but I've a couple of questions. - How long does it stay flexible? If I was to harvest/split some this weekend would it still be flexible a week or 2 later? - In one of the Ray Mears programs you see them boiling up spruce roots. Is...

    Deuter Packs

My previous pack was a Deuter pack (ac32 I think). it was very comfortable, good load transfer, and pretty rugged. But it was heavy (twice the weight empty of my Osprey 30), and after 7 years of use I had warn the fabric off part of the hip belt. Note that is with heavy use as my every day bag...

    Frontier Bushcraft Course

I've not done a Frontier bushcraft course (Am considering the canoe expedition course), but I can say that Paul Kirtley is very knowledgeable and is able to communicate that knowledge very well. If you look on youtube you will find his "ask Paul Kirtley" series of videos (29 at time of writing)...

    hobo or honey

I got one of those wood gasifier stoves as mentioned in this thread. I have only used it in anger once, but it was a bit of a sod to use. Feed it too slowly and it starves, feed it too fast and you choke it. I ended up relighting it twice as I got the balance wrong. It doesn't take much either...

    first folding saw?

I bought a Bahco laplander when I first started out. It's pretty good, I've yet to break it, but it doesn't cut as well as it did when new. I hadn't realised how the cutting performance was tailing off until I used Gardena 14" bow saw. The two just don't compare in terms of performance. I keep...

    Campfire bread experiment

I'll bite. [citation needed] Quite. And in moderation, it's not going to do any major harm, it's not like I'm eating 1kg of the stuff every day. J

    Campfire bread experiment

Since when has white bread been unhealthy? I chose white for a couple of reasons: a) I already had the flour in the cupboard b) Wholemeal bread tends to rise slower, given I was going this in the woods in cool conditions I wanted things to work in my favour c) This was mostly a test of...

    Wood carving inspiration.

On my Sixteen Skills in 2016 project I've set myself two wood carving related tasks: 04. Carve a spoon 08. Carve something useful other than a spoon I'm not a very experienced wood carver, last time I tried to do carve a spoon I spent 4 hours in A&E... I've done things like pegs, a...

What do you pack to be FOUND???

I would say Red. White could be easier to mistake for someone just using a torch to find their way. Red tends to carry further. Modern rear bike lights for example can be visible to the naked eye for several kilometres in clear conditions. J

    Jetboil Genesis

It looks nice, but I wonder if you'd be better off just going for a pair of MSR Whisperlite universals... Would be lighter and cheaper... and more versatile. Combine it with a couple of Primus Eta pots... J

    Ultralight Kit List

I would beg to differ on that one. Sitmat: If you're wearing your water proofs then you don't have something to provide thermal insulation from the ground. Trowel: You make the assumption that there is a stick you can sharpen. Up on the moors often there isn't a tree for miles and you...

    Campfire bread experiment

As part of my Sixteen Skills in 2016, I wanted to have a go at baking bread over an open fire (ideally without resorting to very heavy Dutch ovens). After much research it seemed that dry baking was the way to go. Dry baking is basically sticking one pot inside another with the item you're...
