    Shaving kit

I use a gillette Mach 3. Sure I know that the gillette ladies razors are targetted at us girls, but I find that mach3 blades are cheaper, and work just as well when it comes to shaving my legs and arm pits... Not sure I'd like to try with a straight razor, esp near the femoral artery...

Gel or solid fuel tabs on MKettle / Ghillie / Kelly kettle - any experience?

I used the gel stuff on my crusader once (the place i bought it from included some free when I bought it). It burned well, was clean burning, didn't stink, and worked. *BUT* it left a gunky residue in the pan. Even now it's still there over 15 years later. I don't like it. But then hexi tabs...

    GoPro advice please

A friend of mine who makes youtube videos for a living has produced a nice video about the go pro 5. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTx9lYpfWSg If I was to buy one (saving up for a couple actually), I'd get the 5 too. And then buy shares in San disk for memory cards... J

    Non expensive kit

A challenge for you. Dig up some clay, make a pot, and cook 2 meals and a mug of tea in it. Do that by midsummer (21st June 2017). Post video or photographic evidence, and I'll post you a couple of beers. Good luck J

    Woodgas stove

Whilst the one I just put in the post is doesn't have Lixada written on it, you can get one with lixada written on it on Amazon. I got mine on ebay back when the pound was worth something so it was a bit cheaper. Based on the interest I'm starting to think I should have asked more... :p J

    GIANT bikes?!

Some in the UK. By no means all (26.1% infact). Personally given the choice I'd opt for the Euro version of something, as it's probably built to EU safety standards giving some assurance of safety and quality. Since June I've left the UK for mainland Europe to get away from the anti EU...

    Mountain bike set ups?

In terms of a middle ground between fat bikes and "normal" off road bikes, the Surly troll looks rather nice. It'll take a 3" tyre on the front and a 2.8 on the rear (why they didn't allow for 3" rear I'll never understand...). As for how to carry luggage. I would take a look at how People...

    Gas stoves

The peizo ignition built into any stove is going to have a finite life, the tip of the igniter is in the flame and will get burnt through over time. This is one of the reasons the MSR Micro rocket has a separate piezo igniter. You can buy this separately. Ultimately I've never found myself able...

    Wye not forage for dinner?

Interesting. Is that 15km² based on permanent use? I'm sure the 4 of us could have survived for a few days on a very small area, But we would have stripped it bare, and it may not have recovered enough that we could do it again the next year... Assuming access to water course bearing fish I'd...

    Wye not forage for dinner?

As I stood where the path should be looking up at the stinging nettles above me, I started to question my navigational choices. We were on this path because the path we wanted to take was hidden under an impassible jungle of Brambles, nettles and other spiky vegetation. Batting Triffid like...

    Will there be snow

There might be snow, but I'm about to fit the studded tyres to my bike, which means we'll have just grey dull drizzle instead of what should be winter... J

    Sixteen skills in 2016

Aye. I'm pleased with what I've managed. It was always going to be a tough ask, but circumstances conspired to make it even harder. Just 10 to do in 2017... Oh yes. I've cycled (across 3 trips), from Luxembourg City all the way to Heerlen, minus a short gap between Sank Vitt and Sour Brot...

    Sixteen skills in 2016

Well the year hasn't quite gone to plan with this challenge. Moving country half way through the year didn't help, and spending December on crutches has scuppered pretty much any lingering hope I had of completing this. Doesn't matter too much, I've learned a lot and I will continue to work on...

    Veggies get a raw deal

Simplest of them all to cook - Jacket potato. Wrap in foil or appropriate leaves, place in embers, done. Serve with Cheese or baked beans... Nice and simple... About the only veggie meal I cook on a fire tho... J

    GIANT bikes?!

Giant are fine quality wise, tho obviously the more you pay the better you get. What I would however ask is do you need a mountain bike? Are you going to be off roading on rough terrain? If not you may be better off with a hybrid (like a mountain bike but with more road suitable tyres, still...

    Leathermen

I notice several mentions of the Juice CS4. Note that they changed the blade shape on the Juice CS4 last year some time. I got the original version as I prefer that shape blade, you may prefer the latest version. Just thought I'd give you the heads up. J

    Leathermen

Short version: Depends. Longer version: I have 4 Leatherman multitools. An original wave, a new wave, Original Juice CS4, and a Squirt PS4. The original wave can't be replaced so now I don't take it outside my flat. The new wave is nice, but heavy, you might not be carving a paddle with it...
