    Questions about snow melt.

Thanks everyone for the helpful replies. Sounds like snow -> tea is the way forward. Or I've got some drink tablets I can add. I only expecting snow in the first 1-2 days of a 5 day trip. And will only need to worry about melting snow if the planned 4.1L I'm carrying isn't enough. Thanks all J

    Questions about snow melt.

Looks like the area my planned trip next week goes through has about 150-200mm of snow on the ground. I'll have a stove, cookset and fuel with me so I'm pondering if I can utilise the snow to top up the water I'm carrying. To make it drinkable, do I need to do anything other than melt it in a...

    Primus Fuel Pump leak

I don't have a manual for the pump and I can't seem to find one on the primus website. I've just spent a few minutes going over the pump to find the leak, I've manage pin point where it's coming out. On the photo below it's coming out where the pump plunger goes, at about the 10-11 oclock...

    Planning Southern Scandinavian Adventure

GPS. I have a Wahoo Elemnt Bolt unit on the handlebars with the route programmed in. It gives me a moving icon on a map, as well as beeps when I go off route. It also gives me useful info like Cadence, Heart rate, speed, etc... Very useful. I am a big fan of "Plan your ride and ride your plan"...

    Planning Southern Scandinavian Adventure

Well I do 15km every day just to and from work. That's 75k per week. I don't quite get the whole not cycling through winter thing. Winter just means I put thicker gloves on, and when it gets icy, I add the spiked tyres. It's been snowy here in Amsterdam the last week or so, I've been cycling in...

Personal Location Beacons for UK use?

I have a Delorme InReach Explorer (now owned by Garmin). I wrote a review which is in the reviews section of the site. It needs a subscription, but they start quite low (not checked prices recently). But you can pay as much as you like. J

    Planning Southern Scandinavian Adventure

Given a choice of insects or cold, I choose cold every time. I can always put more clothes on. I've just got in from a chilly overnighter to test my kit. It was only -2°C, but was a good shake down for my kit. Unpaved roads, I use it as a term for anything that isn't tarmac. These are what I...

Winter is coming. Is your kit load out changing with the season?

I swap my socks from the summer to the winter weight change my base layers from 120gsm to 165gsm (250gsm when winter really bites). Swap the sleeping bag from the summer to the winter bag Add a couple of 500ml HDPE nalgene bottles to the pack Remove the water filter Add my Páramo Torres jacket...

    Planning Southern Scandinavian Adventure

I'm planning a bike ride through Denmark, Southern Sweden, and into Norway next summer. My route is going to be a mix of on and off road, and once I reach Sweden I'm hoping to be able to wild camp where possible. The main thing I'm trying to decide on is what time to do it. My main choices are...

Planning Norway to Calais June 2018 - cycle+wild camp

Eurostar to Brussels, ICE to Köln, Then Hamburg, Copenhagen, Malmo, Oslo... You can take bikes on the Eurostar but you have to pay to do so. You can take them on the ICE if they are boxed up. Getting a bike on long distance trains through Germany is a right faff. As for the ride from Norway...

    Primus Fuel Pump leak

I just put my Primus fuel pump (from my Omnilite TI). Only to find fuel leaking out. I'm not sure where it's coming from exactly, It's on a 600ml Primus fuel bottle. I took the pump plunger out of the assembly and checked it over, and it doesn't seem to be coming from there. I'm loathe to try...

    Puritab temperature adjustment

Now it's getting colder I've taken my sawyer filter out my pack and am relying on Oasis puritabs for water treatment. I know that as temperature drops I need to give them more time to work, but wondered if there's a rule of thumb for how long, a sort of for every x below 20C, add y minutes...

Daytrip - what do yOU carry?

Technically Hyponatremic is low sodium, not excess water. It's about electrolyte balance rather than quantity of fluid. Yes we can all go 3 days without drinking, and 3+ weeks without food, doesn't mean to say it's a good idea. I'd rather take an extra bit of water with me on a walk, and have...

    Do I need button compass.

Genuinely not trolling. When you come up out of the metro knowing you want to head North on Rhijnspoorplein, but you can't get a clear view of the sun to see which is north and which is south, a quick look at a compass can have you heading in the right direction. Also useful in London at...

Hunka Bivvy bags - Any good?

I swapped from the MOD bag to the hunka xl. Unless you are a very skinny midget, you're gonna want the XL version. It's not as breathable as the MOD bag, but as long as you don't spend all night breathing into it, don't use a bag that's too warm, and aren't using it in bonkers humidity, it seems...

    Do I need button compass.

I have a button compass on the top of my polymath products EDC fire kit that lives in my pocket. Really useful when coming out of tube stations and you can't see the sun to work out which way you want to go. Wouldn't carry it just for the compass, but it's useful in this config. J
