    Water purification woes...

Another point, sorry to be the bearer of bad news- an Optimus 8R isn't really suitable for regularly purifying large amounts of water- a 4l pot is too large for the stove and the excessive thermal feedback will likely cause it to over pressurise. It will also cost a fortune to run, as modern...

    Water purification woes...

A kelly kettle produces little smoke after the first couple of minutes, unlikely to upset anybody if used in an appropriate place on your three acre plot? Dry fuel is essential, but a 1.5l model would make short work of purifying water. A gravity water filter is also a good bet, as mentioned...

    USB torch / light

@stevec That's what I use- an Anker with a cheapo warm white LED nightlight. Two clicks for trickle charge mode.

    Mushroom Poisoning?

Yes, I remember the 2017 news story about mushrooms sourced in Belarus! I agree with the fascination for mycology- something I'd happily spend a lifetime studying if I had a few spare lifetimes!

    Mushroom Poisoning?

Wow, I've never experienced anything quite that strong! I'd hazard you're right regards individual reactions. A possibility which crossed my mind is the efficiency of the huge mycelium network in absorbing toxins from the soil, which can end up highly concentrated in the fruiting body. If the...

I have given up on sanity

How many of those people actually use the timer on their oven, or need it as yet another clock? A short length of black tape would save a lot of life's precious hours!

Battery generators - what & why?

They're getting too clever, that's the problem!

    The Useful car

Sounds like a description of a pre-millenium Land Rover. A power take off was always an option, so the opportunities were almost endless. A pto or flat belt pulley on the back could power saw benches, feed mills, pumps, cement mixers, sheep shearing kit etc etc... or a a big compressor or...

A big box of primus bits

Definitely interested if you're looking to sell, Primus stoves are my one weakness.... I've got plenty of poor orphaned examples which need parts to return to a life of adventures again!

Battery generators - what & why?

That's where the advantage of a separate component system can outweigh the additional cost, there is more flexiblility. Many Victron inverters, for example, have an 'eco' mode where they regularly briefly switch on, if a load is detected they wake up, if not they continue sleeping.

Can't see a pic... are the parts for older paraffin Primuses?

What wildlife did you spot today?

A first for me today while out walking, which was nearly a disaster- I just noticed a movement early enough to avoid treading on the only great crested newt I've ever seen! Nearly went flying with the tangled sequence of steps I did to avoid it. Turned round for a closer look and it eyeballed me...

    Hand crafted things.

Spot on, it's a mindset, very often specifically: I have a need and here are my resources. The non-bushcraft industrialised mindset would be: Which product can I buy to do this job?

    Vehicle tool kit

That's jogged my memory.... in the boot there's a square of 18mm ply to put under the jack on soft ground, and a couple of offcuts of 4x2 which are needed to jack up the trailer I use most often. Amazingly most of this stuff tucks away into nooks and crannies...

    Woodstoves

Thank you @Falstaff, much appreciated. Last time I looked into this there seemed to be two British Standards that applied to the heater, BS EN 15544:2009 and BS EN 15250:2007 which I did manage to view at the time. |The standard you've linked to is likely valid for the flue, but getting in...

    Vehicle tool kit

Very, very well used MGB GT. Currently doing serious structural work to house so passenger seat is removed to allow carriage of 8' timbers with the back shut. Often towing up to 3/4 ton too... ....but my list would also equally apply to any Land Rover over 20 years old! Something else which...

    Vehicle tool kit

Very sensible, although many have breakdown/recover cover, it can save waiting at the roadside or cancelling a trip. I'm probably an extreme example- my only car is 52 years old so I carry a toolbox with spanners and sockets/pliers/circlip pliers/lump hammer, multimeter, spare fanbelt...

    Swedish preparedness pamphlet

@gibson 175 There are many classics written before the outbreak of the Great War which captured the popular feeling of the time, that war was approaching and preparedness was vital. 'The thirty-nine steps', 'The riddle of the sands' (Childers did his best to get the population and government to...

    Swedish preparedness pamphlet

All very valid points @Woody girl, either grid down or internet down seem the most likely scenarios and the nation's greatest vulnerabilities. It's remarkable how contemporary literature shows just how much of the population could see both world wars coming and were frustrated that the...

Hello from the flat lands of East Anglia

Thank you @Tony and @bopdude. There's certainly a huge wealth of information on here, plenty of older discussions to read through and enjoy on winter evenings!
