    Thoughts on Zoo's

Bristol Zoo had a Polar Bear that paced like that, they had a keeper permanently stood by the enclosure to explain it was an animal reduced from a Circus who had spent it’s life in a trailer cage and had therefore marked out a “cage” in it’s enclosure and stayed inside that during the day. As I...

    Thoughts on Zoo's

When I think about how far zoos have come from my childhood visits to Bristol Zoo, which was your traditional rooms with bars on the front, to a recent visit to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park where you can walk through the enclosures with the animals it is completely different experience, the Polar...

    What are you growing?

I do have some grass growing, I found it in the dirt when I started digging up the weeds, not sure what they are but there is a major root system under the mud that I’m trying to turn in to a lawn. Think it’s going to be a long term project killing the weeds regrowing them and killing them off...

    Hammocks - got some questions

I am a side sleeper at home, but sleep well in a hammock, I tend to start on my side but wake on my back in a Figure of 4 shape, so basically flipped over. Depending on your set up you have a break under the tarp, in my case it’s where the hammock attaches to the straps (called tree huggers)...

    Bulk Buys for Scouts

We bought a load of Mora Craftsman knives from Clas Ohlson, don’t know if they are still operating over here. They were about £3 each and are almost identical to the more expensive Morakniv, but have a ruler on the blade. We used them to teach sharpening as well as knife skills as I could...

    Amateur Radio Operators, Beginners Advice?

I’m not a seasoned operator, by any stretch of the imagination. I do hold a full license as a result of spending every August bank holiday with the local club that my Father in Law founded and they decided that I had to join. My claim to fame was getting to full licence without speaking to...

    Scouts Young and Old?

There is a difference between Drill all the time and doing Drill properly. I had some Air Cadets on DoE placement and the scouts sliding their feet in to Alert, really upset them. I let them run a drill session for the kids, lasted about 5 minutes as I had to stop them since they were doing it...

    Scouts Young and Old?

They were a very popular with our scouts, but useless for playing splits as if they hit handle first the handle could shatter and you were left with a stick tang knife. [emoji2] My Mora Scout was much better, especially with the balance. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Luminescent/reflective tent wires?

I bought some reflective spoke things, which fit on the guy lines for the scouts hammocks. For mine I bought reflective guy lines and glow in the dark runners. My tent has reflective guy lines. I seem to remember someone talking about using Mountain Dew bottle, the bright green one, cut in to...

    Leatherwork - fair prices?

FWIW, I have asked several craftsman what a piece would cost, I’m fully aware that it won’t be cheap, that’s what eBay is for, sometimes it means that the item goes onto my wish list for when I have some spare cash/birthday or I consign my self to something less. I would never tell someone I...

    Close Encounter

Came back from the jungle in Belize, dropped my kit off and hit the shower. Walked back into the room and everyone else looked very pale and were quiet. Turns out I’d brought a hitch hiker back from the jungle which our local cleaner had dispatched. There wasn’t enough left to confirm whether...

    Winter gloves not mitts

I bought some sealskinz merino liner gloves, but it hasn’t been cold enough to need them under my gloves yet, I also have some Mountain Warehouse magic gloves that will do the same thing. I have the all weather, which is what I bought the liners for, but also some cold weather cycling ones...
