My guess would be spotted cranefly. It's quite lightly marked on the back of the head compared to the tiger. Hard to say for sure without seeing the detail of the wing and the abdomen markings though. There was one in my kitchen this morning :)
I found a hornets' nest in an old hollow tree and went back in the winter to see how it looked after they'd gone. I've still got the brood chamber here.
They also nest in the roof of my parents' house and I watch them stealing the grapes off my vines in late summer. Amazing creatures.
I left a handful of barn owl pellets on the shelf in my office and forgot about them. I only remembered when there was a bit of an outbreak of case bearing moths in the house and I tracked it down to the pellets which were pretty much heaving with larvae at that point. I've put them inside an...
I'm going to try that wild strawberry tea tomorrow. We're getting over run with the stuff in the garden and it needs a bit of cutting back. I've been drinking a lot of nettle tea with rosemary recently. I use an insulated stainless steel cafetière as a tea pot which helps keep the water...
I imagine the style has as much to do with it as the writing. I can't imagine writing "Hands off my melons" on a hori hori would turn it from a trowel into a zombie slaying weapon but technically the law interprets it that way.
I've had some parcels arrive that used sheep wool as the padding. I couldn't reuse the stuff so I put it out for the birds to use for nesting material this spring and it all disappeared very quickly. I'll empty the nest boxes in the autumn and compost the old nests. I'm not sure I'd trust it for...
It's also worth mentioning that the Rebar EDC might not actually be a legal EDC as you can argue that the awl has a cutting edge and locks, and the saw blade locks so it is in a grey area of locking knifes/tools. Given how the 'guilty until proven innocent' UK knife law seem to work I wouldn't...
There was a container ship called the Tokio Express that was hit by a rogue wave somewhere near Cornwall in 1997 and it lost a container with 4.8 million pieces of Lego inside it. It's famous among beach combers and people are still finding bits on beaches around the world. There were some Lego...
This reminded me. I also found a Lego brick near the pre-decimal washing up liquid bottle and I brought it home and cleaned it up. The markings suggest it's also from the 1960s but despite being buried 60 years ago it still fits together perfectly with modern bricks and isn't showing more than a...
I think there's quite a few battles with plastic that could be fought and won before the issue of dog poop bags becomes the real priority. We've used washable nappies for both kids along with washable baby wipes and napkins etc. Every midwife, doctor or health visitor we've dealt with has said...
Supermarkets are changing to that type of plastic and the use of it is evolving constantly as experience changes and newer materials become available. You now see some labelled 'home compostable' and some labelled 'put in your council food waste bin'. Note the word compostable doesn't mean just...
I've always thought that biodegradable plastic of any kind should be banned for use as dog poo bags. All it does is encourage people to chuck the bag in the hedge as they think it will disappear in a few days. Someone locally started a nice heap of them at a pinch point in the path and they were...
Is that just a dangler sheath or does it have a belt loop? It looks a bit different to the standard one that comes with them. How much use has it had and can you also post a pic from the top down showing the liners please?
This is a question that keeps me awake at night but most of the problems are caused by UK law and the general knife-fear culture we live in. I used to rely on the SAK farmer for everything but ended up downgrading to a normal SAK so I could have scissors and tweezers etc. It's more versatile but...
That's a whole big debate in itself but I saw an article about it recently which looked interesting. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-55817385
My only worry is that with rabbit and hare populations in decline as well a large drop in squirrel numbers would reduce the available prey...
Normally I'd agree (although I still back petitions that are at least likely to get to parliamentary debate level) but in this case the backing of 50 organisations who have quite a lot of influence and have a vested interest in seeing this policy followed through to some degree does add a lot of...
