Alternative to GB Scandinavian Forest Axe

My local dealer said GB are putting their prices up 20% this year as supply is outstripping demand. A good alternative to the Scandi or Wilderness is the Council Tools Hudson Bay Velvicut. It's a beautiful axe with great cutting power.

    Chaga in England??

I don't think that is Chaga Sundowner. It doesn't tend to wet out like a sponge and the removal scar looks wrong. If you break it open it will be corky inside. I agree with Mary, let it dry out as quite a few fungi will take a spark. As for finding Chaga, I've seen it most on mature trees...

    First post - Sabre 45

It's a great pack but I wish it had a floating lid. Come to think of it I'm not a big fan of side pockets either. Less is more sometimes.

Vihe Vaellus Laavu Mini Shelter experiences

Russ, I had one for a while then sold it on as it didn't suit my needs. Pro's and Con's: Pro's: Well made, light, simple. Con's: Difficult to rig tightly, supplied white cord average quality, quite low so no working space (if that's what you want), can be tricky to manage campfire smoke...

    Pocket Barometers?

I missed your question before Wheelie, but in my opinion a Thommen isn't waterproof. I used to use mine regularly and it usually lived in a wet pocket so I think this is why it stopped working. I think it went to a display of old kit after that! You might get one cheap off the bay, they...

    Pocket Barometers?

The Suunto Core and Vector watches have a barometer and altimeter functions that are accurate and reliable. They also have a weather arrow (based on the pressure) showing the general trend. If you're doing an extended trip would you not want to cut items or have kit that is multi purpose...

    Berghaus Vulcan II

Vulcan rucksacks have been around a long time (20 years +) so there are plenty around therefore I would wait a while and try and pick one up second hand. Size 4 is a bit harder to find but they do come up every now and again. You'll probably get a mint one for about £100.

Advice Needed for 3 Nights in the Cairngorms

You might want to look at walking in to Ryvoan or Ruigh Aiteachain bothy where you will have a warm dry shelter and fire and a place to paint. Neither are too far from the roadhead and you should be safe as long as you don't do anything daft, they should be quiet until Christmas. Their locations...

    1984 dated Berghaus Crusader 2

I think the earlier Crusaders and Cyclops Roc's lacked side compression straps and the plastic ski attachments were more rounded at the edges. I read somewhere that Berghaus had to use canvas as they ran out of Cordura during the Falklands conflict era, I'm not sure this is correct though as the...

    Solo stove pot 1800

I think these would be great but I hate the side handle style - not comfortable to hold at all although arguably more functional to remove from a stove then the smaller type. Personally I'rd go for the Mors Pots / Pathfinder depending on what metal you prefer, cheaper too.

    Issue PCS Lightweight Thermal Smock

I got it issued as a fleece and as a replacement for the carp combat cardigan. A wicking base layer seems most appropriate but it might be different for each service / different units. I've carried on using my HH pile jacket which is far superior to both items.

    Shops in North Wales

You could try Pro - adventure in Llangollen there is also a wee hill shop in Llanberis that has some bushy gear (I can't remember the name). I don't know whether they will stock the Mora but I think they would be your best bet. You can always buy a shiny GB axe if they haven't :-)

    First ever Chaga haul!!!!

I saw a flat disc off and use it as a hand drill / bow drill baseboard, I'm not totally proficient at the hand drill technique but I think it's a lot easier than using wood. I also use it as an ember extender and intend to brew it up when I get chance. I read an article about using a whole one...
