    Modern day Billhook

I did notice Silky make a billhook, a Yoki - http://www.silkyfox.co.uk/yoki.php A bit pricey for me and I wonder how it would compare to an old English style billhook. I would have thought the course would have a few to try. If it's Devon hedge style then a shovel and saw might be just as...

What to do with partially boggy land?

I would again suggest you have a more in depth think about what you want to achieve. Do you want a load of slow growing curly willows? If not then don't plant them! Do you want to make baskets or do you think you could sell basket willow? If not then dont grow them. Etc. I've planted various...

Thanks for the tip. Mine are Anker but don't seem to offer a trickle mode. Useful to know for future reference.

    Grass Snake

I was gutted to find a large dead one on our road, it's such a quiet back road I doubt someone didn't see it before running over it. Yours looks very fresh, I half wonder whether you could eat it?

What to do with partially boggy land?

Depends what you want from a tree, I've planted hazel that's produced nuts in 4 years, and various fruit trees that have produced in less time. I'd take a step back. I agree with Broch in looking carefully at the land before deciding what to do. I would also have thought you would decide to...

    Mushroom Poisoning?

I've heard of orange birch boletes being mildly toxic and requiring 15 mins of cooking, but your symptoms sound more like what you hear of fly agaric ingestion. Strange.

    Bialaddin T10 table lamp

It'll be nice to see it working. Has more than a hint of 1970's Dr Who baddie about it.

    Instant Potato Flakes - Smash

Whilst obviously joking, I have often thought it would be useful to have a full meal in a pouch just like cat or dog food. The best thing I can find is those Merchant Gourmet pouches - https://www.merchant-gourmet.com/collections/all/filter_pouches

What wildlife did you spot today?

Today my OH spotted a pair of mating wasps at it in a sun lit gorse bush. The new queen was much bigger than the male and they were there for several minutes. Not something I've seen before.

What wildlife did you spot today?

I've just seen that, one of my favourite creatures, sort of remind me of work where I used sort out other people's mess. We get quite a few here and they even sort out the cat mess.

    Woodstoves

I was going to start another thread on what to plant as I'm often on the look out for new ideas. The problem for us is most of our ash will be gone in a few years due to ADB. Hornbeam is loved by squirrels so is out; beech, sycamore, field and other maples and oak also get badly damaged so are...

    Woodstoves

We currently use about 5 cubic meters a year for most of our later autumn, winter and early spring heating, plus most cooking and small amounts of hot water. That's about a cord and a half. We can provide all our wood from about 15 acres of woodland, mostly thinnings and windfall (which often...

    One use of ammo can.

What cans are they, army surplus or new? We still get the old metal type ammo cans. I tend to have to keep on top of stuff laying around otherwise a mouse or vole will nibble or nest in it!

    Planning permission

To add to what Kepis and others have said, in my experience planning departments can vary from place to place. When I put a pre-planning app in I attached photos and a couple of sketches. It seems our current council mostly tell you to put in full planning. I've have also drawn up my own plans...

    Planning permission

An experienced developer, or even a competent builder who does a few properties up on the side, will in all likelihood know what they'll get through planning so I doubt you getting planning will add anything to the value of your house.

I would also worry what the house insurance companies would think of one. I do find the mainstream companies don't like anything nonstandard.

    Stray cat - advice

Well, the cat is still here and being well fed. As mentioned a few times if we can catch it and know it's not owned by anyone then we'd get chipped and neutered. But, although it is happy for us to feed it and it comes out and waits for food it is still very cautious, so catching it will not be...

The oak logs I used were freshly cut from my woodland. The spawn was put in the fridge on delivery and logs cut next day.
