    Beekeeping for beginners

This is where you'll get all sorts of answers. It depends on the bees, some are far more docile than others. Also it depends on how gentle you are with them. My bees can be a bit aggressive, not as bad as some but not great. I can get stung most times when inspecting my 6/7 hives. Often one...

    Beekeeping for beginners

Have you been stung much William? Until I did my beekeeping course I don't recall being stung by a honey bee, perhaps once before. I quickly got stung when inspecting hives out our bee group's apiary which was good as I knew I didn't get any reaction.

    Beekeeping for beginners

Only 21? One of the most important pieces of advice I would give to a beginner is to listen to advice but to think it through themselves and not rush into anything. You get plenty of helpful people but some seem to drift off into arrogance and showing off. As for bees stealing all the food...

It's a woven mesh that you place over the top box and the bees will fill it with propolis, in theory. I have scraped propolis off boxes and frames but it is mixed with wax, bits of squished bee and earwig etc, so hopefully the mat will produce a cleaner product.

    Beekeeping for beginners

I keep bees as I love getting stung, spending a fortune on kit and wondering if they are going to die out or swarm... Actually, the main reason was we never saw honey bees where we live and decided to get a colony. We get quite a bit of honey, which we use and give a fair bit to friends and...

Amazon Prime - Have you quit?

We only take out Prime when we need it. I'm currently using a free month offer as I needed something next day. Worth cancelling and taking it out only when needed or you want to watch something.

    Still lots of Covid about?

No. I don't know why they're worn but there have been studies that show viruses pass through them so they are of little or no use to stop covid. I saw a study that said FFP3 masked helped and could stop transmission if both people wore them (i.e. Infector and infectee). We use FFP3s if we need...

    Still lots of Covid about?

I don't know of anyone who's had covid in the last year. When my mum was in and out of hospital last week no one was taking covid precautions and only a very few people where wearing masks. With regards to masks, I thought the standard surgical masks did nothing to stop the spread of covid so...

    Guinea Pig Manure

It's unlikely you don't have rats anyway and they'll find food about the garden and nesting material regardless of your guinea pigs. We have rats and one of their favourite foods is garden snails and they nest in dried leaves, grass and any plastic they can get their paws on. However...

    Urban Navigation

I know the theory but plenty of houses have had solar panels fitted, probably with grant money, and they don't have a south facing roof. SW facing makes sense as you get the solar late in the day when it might be more useful but they're slapped on all sorts of roofs. I even saw one house where...

I know it's a myth on trees but wondering about algae/mould on a building. Also render can crack more on the south side that north. Even smoke on a chimney can stain more in one direction.

If you roughly know a town then you could use signs of landmarks such as A&E, seafront or a station. Personally I don't always have a phone or data on it so can't rely on it for a map. Even the maps I have are get out of date quickly as well. I would also caution about solar panels, quite a...

I should have had a compass the other night when I tried to get out of Brighton. I forgot there was a war on so all the road signs had been removed.

Heads up - Post office not sending sharps after 22nd April

Yes, interesting. It seems to show why a total ban could have been easier for them, now a hunting knife is banned but a bushcraft knife isn't - is there a difference?

    Home first aid kit

Thanks for the replies. I had hoped to find a suitable kit to buy so I don't miss out on something useful. However, I can't seem to find anything that has the basics of what I need so will probably order some refill items. I have a few more questions.... 1) As I use chainsaws etc I tend to like...

    What did you forage today?

Yes, I just pick the top tips from the young nettles you see at this time of year. Rinse to get out anything, drain and throw in a curry for a few mins. Quite a large amount cooks down a fair bit. Tomorrow they will go into a ramsons and nettle quiche.

That is not what is being said is it, WG is asking for suggestions for her to try. If they are reasonable then other could also have a go. As it happens I have an endless supply of nettles, plenty of spare Lime bark etc and other resources such as braken, fir and pine trees etc. When I had the...
