    A Rethink of Green

I've worked on a few sites where I've been able to do a four day working week. Start work ag seve AM, work through to 17:30 (10 hours worked) and take Friday off. 20% less fuel used to get to and from work, 20% less wear and tear on the van. o e less days worth of unloading, and loading the...

    Sharpening kit workshop

First I use a Trend Diamond hone, usually its a fairly big one cos thats what I have in my workvan or sometimes just for a knife its a DMT Diafold which is about the same size as a pen knife. Then this is the stuff I use on a bit of leather glued to a bit of wood. Waxy base containing chromium...

    Sharpening kit workshop

I don't mind a bit of wood with leather and the green stropping compound and use it on a few knives and even plane blades but I absolutely cantbe done with the inconsistent angle that soft pads like mousemats give. Waay too much give in that system. Yeah, it polishes the edge but its ugly as sin...

    Non-military camouflage?

Quite like the T shirts a d I generally figure that not talking at 80 Db and having footware that doesn't clump like a Palace guard goes a long way. Just stopping to look about and listen every once in a while helps a lot. On the quiet jacket thing. If its raining hard its often noisy enough...

Recommendations for decent pair of walking shoes or boots on a budget.

I got some German army goretex boots for about seventy quid grade 1. Second pair now and I got about eighteen months out of the last pair at maybe two thousand miles or more? The dog catches frisbee and my wife also takes him out when I'm at work so likely does a load more miles.

4x4 insurance (30 year old Mitsubishi Delica)

I've been happy enough for years on a commercial policy with Anthony D Evans insurers. They do a lot of horseboxes and so on plus my 19 year old workvan. It's never been expensive enough that I've felt like changing.

    Brambles.

Dethorning is pretty easy with secateurs. While the stem is still attached, use the fully open secateurs to scrape sideways along the stem, turn it a bit after each sideways stroke then cut it. That way you can grip it without being punctured. Hold that de-thorned part in one hand and scrape the...

    Jacket/Smock musings....

Roll of little placky bags for dog eggs. Secateurs for guerrilla gardening/path maintenance usage. Two quid floppy frisbee for the dog to catch. Sometimes a hat.

    Brambles.

Ha, over the last year I've been quietly guerrilla path clearing an area to reinstate a footpath by one of the local rivers. Just everytime I walk the dog I've had my old CK secateurs and have removed about 160 yards of dense bramble stems. Little by little and I'm very nearly through to the...

What is an every day carry really when you get down to it?

I carry a penknife almost everyday, but I'm not calling it an EDC mostly cos I really dislike the whole acronym thing, plus I'm neither firing the pics onto Instagram nor am I an American prepper. Bit like I like and have motorcycles but absolutely am NOT a Biker. Maybe I just don't like being...

What is an every day carry really when you get down to it?

The coin is to toss into the air and put a hole through with the Glock.

What is an every day carry really when you get down to it?

As far as I can work out from seeing EDC threads it's all about the Instagram pictures. Knife, money clip, expensive watch, possibly on a treestump or bit of reindeer hide. If it's in America theres maybe a Glock which looks dead handy to cart around when you pop into Bargain Booze for a couple...

    The other half - Handles.

If I was to change the handle on something like an Opinel cos it didn't suit me I'd have to change the blade steel as well.

    The other half - Handles.

Plain, unadorned and even though I have large hands I like the grip to be quite slim. Some have a grip that looks like a four year old drew a knife and someone else used that fridge art as a scale drawing and faithfully replicated it. Bit like British digging picks in that respect. Numb things...

    Best EDC Prybar?

Top left. The short part claw are ok, as is the circular dimpler thing. The long part claws however are ok for pulling nails but fairly gash for pretty much most other prybar use. It's nicer to carry than the Estwing steel one I have but far less use. I wanted to like it, but dont. I'm a...

    Best EDC Prybar?

Naaah, it'll be fat for a reason. Its too weak to thin down. Ti is strong for it's weight not so much for its size if you see what I mean. If I thought it would have been strong enough for my usage when thinned down I would have taken a flap disc to it a couple of years ago. All the Ti hammers...

    Farmer sprays cyclist wild camper.

When I was a nipper and we had our hillfarm we sometimes used to get people rocking up and asking to camp on our land, we used to let em in a field with no cattle or sheep in. I'd pop over with a few (glass back then ) bottles of our water from our supply. I remember one family had a nice old...

Voluntarily handing in a large blade to the UK police

Must admit that after seeing knives handed in by well meaning people during "Arms Amnestys" then prominently displayed on tables. I would honestly rather turn a knife to slag with a oxy cutter than let the police display a working tool as a weapon. They lose a little bit more of my respect every...

    Watch repair vs new watch?

The kinetic is movement, not very efficient if watch forums are to be believed. IIRC Pulsar is owned by Seiko and they share the Solar calibre. Kinetics used a capaciter to store energy and I dunno if the solar ones use a battery or a capaciter. Mechanical automatic watches are beautiful and...

Running DIY WoodStove over night in a small cabin & safety issues

I'm more concerned by a throttled flue than a mostly shut down air inlet. Both produce carbon monoxide but the open flue is better at getting rid of it.
