What wildlife did you spot today?

and early sniper rifle scopes iirc -- judging from our local spiders easy to believe (they like to put their nets at head hight across the trails in the jungle...), one spider in New Guinea produces nets strong enough to catch small fish...

What wildlife did you spot today?

occasional guide for tourists (national park and nearby private property which includes bowdrill demo ), still stuck in paperwork to obtain my license... no special wildlife today, just the normal hummingbirds, herons/ egrets etc. along river and poison dart frogs outside my door (i don't know...

What wildlife did you spot today?

no, unfortunately not... if there any around it would be most likely high up in the mountains where there's less destruction (=lot's of land clearing along coast for construction and inland for farming, + (illegal) logging :-( ) today however saw my third Red Brocket Deer since coming 7years ago...

    Slingshot/Catapult shooters

i wish i'd be half as good as him, but after watching a few of his videos my accuracy seems to have slightly improved :-) -- i'm still a long way from being dangerous for our local critters, though...

What wildlife did you spot today?

today only a juvenile nine-banded armadillo; yesterday howling and capucine monkeys, raccoons, coatis, two-toed sloths, vultures, woodpeckers and a bunch of tourists (=i was making some income as tour guide :P ) and earlier this week two peccaries. living in central america leads to different...

    Handkerchiefs

(cotton) hankie since my long-ago (and not voluntarily) days of wearing camo and carrying an assault rifle. unlike tissues it's rather hard to blow into them and get snot onto your hands when blowing too hard :P ,they don't get soggy in your pocket when you get wet or sweat (which is common in...

    Slingshot/Catapult shooters

i'm using pebbles because they're for free (and i'm on a low budget), but i've also a casting mould for fishing sinkers, so i could cast my own .42cal ammo, too... there's a clip on YouTube called "carolina slingshot man" or something like this -- Rufus Hussey (=the guy featured) looked like a...

    Slingshot/Catapult shooters

my hoofs are about average size :P and i didn't eat the bullet ant.... they can be up to 20mm long and the one i shot happened to turn up in front of me while i was practicing :-)

    Slingshot/Catapult shooters

my slingshot is made from a forked branch, i'm using flat bands and switched to "over the top" attachment about 18months ago (after "through the fork" since long-ago childhood); ammo is river pebbles. so far i'm hopeless beyond 5m but it's relaxing :-) my only kill was a bullet ant about 5ft...

    Plastic free camping

thanks, i'll search for it (given the amount of videos he produces it might take some time :P but soon i'll hopefully have better internet available)

    Plastic free camping

how would you make one?! iirc they were already around during the US civil war... rubber trees are everywhere around here (not the species once farmed commercially, but a related species), but you'd have to collect quite a bit of latex and then be quick enough to apply it before it hardens...

aluminium water bottles for carrying fuel?!

throwing them at the jerk who brought them -- i like your way of thinking :P

    Plastic free camping

for shelter the "plash palatka" (=russian military canvas tarp) might be an option or a DIY tarp from a painters tarp and silicone or some other waterproofing substance... given our rainforest conditions here i'm sticking with my existing synthetic solutions which require less maintenance (and...

Walking the Amazon - Ed Stafford

thanks for presenting me with another problem: now i've another book on my wish list... :P (so far i haven't even found a book shop around here...)

    EDC lighters or firemakers

i don't leave the farm without my shoulder bag, which contains flint and steel, magnifying glass, some tinder and a small container with matches (for emergencies, but i haven't used new-fangled methods since late 2011); on the farm i tend to ignite a piece of coconut husk on the stove if i burn...

aluminium water bottles for carrying fuel?!

it's not just the material, they also don't have the right shape to fit with the rest of my set-up (one is a oval military-style bottle saying "made in Hungary" , the other one a flimsy-looking cylindrical one)... i've a total aversion against aluminium cookware since my (involuntary) days in...

    Legality and Perception of EDC's

occasionally you hear about an incident involving machetes around here, but in the costa rican countryside nobody freaks out if they see one: they're common farm/household items and even kids walk around with them, likewise our local supermarket owners don't panic if i enter with my Ben Orford...
