quick update: a week ago we had a BBQ with a group of students from a european university who were here for a two-week field trip -- one week of which was in our area. i helped out as a tour guide and on the evening of the BBQ (coincidentally also Australia Day) demonstrated bowdrill fire -- one...
i've worked out in the sun in northern Australia at 48°C in the shade with 80% humidity which means cooling by sweating isn't working very well, so you need to adapt slowly to these conditions (we had several people with issues...)
drinking is important, of course, but as others already...
both the smell and taste of beer make me want to throw up.... imho it ranks only slightly below chewing gum on the list of most disgusting things invented by mankind
especially after the imprisonment and stress of my previous workplace.... also realised it was beginning of last year that i got my new leatherman "surge"...
and while not exactly bushcrafty: christmas i bought a second-hand mountain bike from our local bike mechanic which i'm hoping to use on...
limited funds meant only two purchases this year: a "vortex" monocular and a custom made pouch to hold my leatherman surge + victorinox bit set (got it as a gift a week ago)
not a purchase but in july i got my freedom and sanity back after quitting my previous ..... job and moving back to the...
not much sunshine here lately as it's our rainy season-- i've to sleep under two blankets and need a t-shirt even during daytime... :)
but being in nature is a good compensation and hopefully we'll get some sunshine (and reception) again... (==since someone stole the cable two weeks ago our...
hi! i've been absent from the forum for about five month for various reasons (see my thread " ruediger roll and a rant" for some details): after one incident too many i left my previous employer and moved to an off- grid farm in the jungle -- the owner found himself facing an ocelot in his...
thanks for the advice
that moisture here is indeed good at sneaking into everything and slowly destroying it :-( (which means permanently checking and TLC to avoid unpleasant surprises...)
the camera is basically part of my edc (whenever i leave the property), but i guess i've to get into the...
the fleece liners i used didn't feel sweaty at all -- it's getting old but the one i'm having with me was bought seventeen years ago in Australia ( "NT General Store" in Darwin iirc)... likewise i'm using a fleece blanket here in the caribbean which is nice and cozy (in addition to my toe...
thanks for the replies :)
i'll wait for the next dry day (it's been pouring down all day...) and then open the camera and put it in a bag of rice (which is easy to come by as it's a staple food here in the caribbean 8-) )
i normally leave my camera inside my shoulder bag (otherwise i'll forget...
one of the items in my bag is a fuji xp80 pocket camera (supposedly waterproof and bought in 2015 after posting a thread on here looking for a new toy :-) )which i carry to take occasionally pics of wildlife. i noticed since a while that the screen got blurry around the edges, today (after not...
sorry if i go slightly off topic:
my previous comment was not a serious suggestion. while i do agree that's its indeed a somewhat crazy hunting method i don't think it's more inhumane than driving a pig towards a hunter waiting with a spear... .i've no idea when this hunting method evolved, but...
why not going Aussie/ Kiwi style?! :p (= a pack of trained dogs with body armour to seek and surround the pig and the hunter goes in and "finishes the job" with a pig sticker (=large knife)) no risk of stray bullets in populated areas...
or maybe call Asterix & Obelix for help... :P
i managed to get away from the nonsense of my work place for some hours, so yesterday i got an opportunity to go for a short stroll in the rain on my friend's jungle property. during a break in the rain i took my (well-wrapped) monocular out of the bag to count the creepy-crawlies in the fur :p...
thanks for your detailed reply! :-)
avoiding to get bitten is by far the best strategy, but i've encountered snakes in the most unlikely places incl. shower (a king brown living under the wooden floor on dampier peninsula ) and two fer-de-lance in the same toilet here in costa rica (one of...
i presume PLB means a locator beacon?! i don't have one or can afford one and mobile phone reception can be bad or non existent even just a few kilometres from civilisation over here so i'm afraid getting to the nearest road and from there to the hospital by myself is the only option :-(...
with the exception of coral snakes (which i encountered only as road kills and in one place) all venomous snakes here are pit vipers which have a distinctive head shape which helps a lot with ID but if i understand correctly pressure immobilization isn't a good idea when bitten by one (see post...
quick update: i've been playing "peeping tom" at our neighbours since friday evening and i'm clearly able to see what they're doing ( before someone gets wrong ideas: i'm talking about the local troop of howling monkeys :P ) -- i'm getting clear images during the day and at dawn :) , i'm also...
