    Woodstoves

I’m a huge fan of Jotul stoves, the problem with them is that they usually require a 10” flue as opposed to the normal 6” I’ve had one fitted and used regularly with a stainless twin wall flue for the last 10-12 years. While it does get swept each year it’s never needed it. Totally bomb proof.

I only have a Felicia 4 combo and matching Spydersaw, both with plain black moulded FRN handle.

    Degrees of variation (from North)

One thing to keep in mind is the date that the digital data was licensed for the phone company to use it. Digital data is often several years out of date and this may account for some discrepancies

    Yew Wood Chippings

It depends on whether you have pets that may ingest it accidentally (perhaps while digging or picking something else up) Personally I wouldn’t use it in a path because I have dogs, they’re always picking stuff up and it only takes a small amount of taxine to be fatal to one of them. Taxine is...

I absolutely agree about laws that are tinkered with for political ends being poorly thought out.

Laurentius, owners of antiques and collectible weapons have a defence in law. There was no misunderstanding as such, I didn’t imply at any time that the spear would be carried in a public place without good reason. However the 2019 offensive weapons act was updated July 14 2022 to include...

    Spearhead.

Don’t get me wrong but self defence in the UK is still a valid legal defence, especially in the case of home invasion. However, possession of an offensive weapon for the purpose of self defence is not legal. The definitions of what is an offensive weapon are continually being tightened (by...

Not really, not to turn the end. Most centre lathes have a tubular drive for the chuck so you can feed bar through it, the spear shaft should fit through a 2” throat.

It’s a pity you don’t have access to a centre lathe. It would be very quick and perfectly strait :whistling:

    Kindling splitter

I just use an axe and splitting block, if the wood that I’m hitting needs steadying I use a previously cut stick of kindling to hold it in place so that my fingers are never in danger. If the wood is too thin to stand up I lay it down and hit it in line with the grain. For even thinner sticks or...

    Favourite "Bushcraft" activities for relaxing

The zen art of hunting with a rifle. Calm and focused while at the same time being totally detached. Difficult to explain.

    Cuts in difficult places!

I’ve never had any issues but then again I’ve only used it on fairly minor wounds. It is recognised as a household product that can be used as a styptic. I’ve also used it when our sheep have broken a horn off at the base so it will stop a major bleed if need be.

    Mice in Van (again)

The other issue with poison is for the brief period of time it takes the dead mouse to desiccate it will stink…poisoned mice hiding away in walls or under floorboards stinking the place up…not nice.

    Mice in Van (again)

I’ve heard that some councils have trialed a similar device to deter teenagers from gathering in trouble hot spots.

Campfire ban being discussed in Cairngorms

I carry my plumbers heat proof mat wrapped around my Trangia fuel bottle and secured with elastic because they don’t last long if they’re creased or folded. This method of protecting the ground or picnic tables has worked for me for years. A different trick is to carry an additional frying pan...
