Can’t keep a good tree down

It is a sycamore, that is what they do. I have seen the same with trees felled by over zealous councils, they keep trying to come back.

How to plan a solar system

I have only had this system 9 months with a 100w panel and a 50AH Lipo battery but the Renogy charge controller has already given up the ghost! I shall be emailing them tomorrow.

    Battery powered Strimmer

I have got an Erbauer strimmer and Hedge trimmer that use the same battery. So far as I am concerned the strimmer sucks, it feels underpowered and won't tackle the tough stuff but the Hedge trimmer is good.

Been watching videos of folks building rough log cabins in the woods, calling it bushcraft

I have been a naughty boy today, I have been out scavenging fallen logs to use as part of my hugelkultur, but then I guess it is still sustainable albeit I am not leaving the logs in situ to degenerate.

    Jacket/Smock musings....

It rather depends on whether I am wearing a jacket or not and how many pockets. As a rule I like to carry essentials in belt pouches as in summer I find a jacket rather hot to wear and it will be rolled up in my haversack or backpack.

    Forest schools are a failure.

This is all begging a question, how did all of us come to appreciate "bushcraft"? Were we not all exposed at some point to the natural environment beyond? I grew up on the margins of the country, but I am sure that not every kid who grew up on my estate necessarily shares my enthusiasm, however...

The Trouble with Wish Lists - Price Inflation

That bedroll is bonkers, wax canvas tarp, army blanket and some blanket pins and Bob is your proverbial.

What is an every day carry really when you get down to it?

You wear underwear in case of accidents and carry keys cos you live in a dodgy neighbourhood and don't want to leave the door on the latch.

I snapped the end off the awl on my farmer but managed to repair it with a file.

What is an every day carry really when you get down to it?

To go to the shops I will take my keys, my wallet, my phone, my watch, a handkerchief, a bag for the shopping, my bus pass in case I get lazy, my sturdy walking stick to fight off any bears or wolves, and usually my clothes :)

    Night Classes.

I can remember doing night classes various night classes back in the day, just for the interest and something to do. Amongst the classes I remember doing was the history of photography, primitive religions, the literature of King Arthur, mostly courses in the arts and literature as well as...

    Crossbow ban consultation

Maybe there will be an outlaw guild of fletchers and archers somewhere in Sherwood forest.

    Crossbow ban consultation

If I were that desperate to own a crossbow, I would simply go out and make one, it is not rocket science. I do hope this doesn't start a slippery slope with restrictions on long bows next.

Utility Knives and Multitools – Are they Legal for Camping?

It all comes down to common sense in the end, a little risk assessment as to where you are going as to whether you can justify your tools. Machete and billhook on my allotment and in my car as I drive there and back. Still in my car when I go to the supermarket later? No. SAK I will take...

Voluntarily handing in a large blade to the UK police

There will be talk of a lot of things, however anything that is neither practicable nor enforcable, or meets with a lot of industry resistance is unlikely to make it to the final draft, however I do worry about definitions, such as defining a bowie knife as a combat knife specifically and...

Voluntarily handing in a large blade to the UK police

Indeed, Labour supporter though I am, I have little faith in Keir Starmer keeping his word on anything, he does not have a very good track record on sticking to his guns if you pardon the metaphor. Hoping he will drop this nonsense as soon as he is engaged in sorting out some of the real...

    Spiritual connection to nature

I do feel a very strong connection to nature, and always have. Is it a spiritual connection? It depends upon what you mean by spiritual, but I feel that the same spirit that runs through nature is what runs through me, there isn't a real separation, even in my flat I am surrounded by plants and...

Voluntarily handing in a large blade to the UK police

Throw it in the river. Future archaeologists will be able to study it then and determine the typology. If you hand it into the old Bill it will further stigmatise and demonise working knives.

Woolly Pully vs Fleece vs Ranger Shirt as Mid-Layer?

I don't think you can beat an old fashioned wooly pully. I stopped buying fleece some time ago for environmental reasons.

    Car sleeping?

Last year out camping in Wales the wind was blowing so hard it was threatening to blow my tent down or rain hard so as I would wake up in a puddle. I chickened out and spent the night in my car instead and slept well and comfortably. The tent was still there in the morning, but it would have...
