I had to use A LOT of nikwax for my cargo chute....didn't really work either. I'm not sure I really see the point, to be honest. Unless you are pressed up against it the water runs down the nylon and you still don't get wet. I think it would be a relatively good idea with a small chute but...

I must admit, I never leave home without the bivy and will always use it. You can't guarantee anything when out at night and even the lightest shower can seriously degrade your enjoyment of a potentially good night's sleep. What have you got to lose?

Would you happen to have a link to this information? I'd be intrigued to find out who trained him. I've read his bio and subsequent news articles and he appears to have been completely untrained apart from 'general knowledge' that he collected growing up in Scotland.

Ok, I've just got to the end of the show and here's what I think. Summary: a little bit of training, even a single day's worth, goes a long way. He appeared to go out there with the right kit (in most respects) but not a lot of the knowledge required to actually survive. I was impressed...
