    Oysters, jelly ears and curly kail

    Must admit, this year, for me anyway, has been a washout for foraging. Sloes are already shrivelling, rose hips are black, hawthorn and rowan berries non existent...the list goes on. I have noticed the Jews ears back out and there is a tree with huge oysters on it last year that I'll have to...

    Peaks to the south, a 9 mile long loch to the north and a chunk of wood in between, virtually running the full length of the loch. Should keep you happy for a few days. Read McFarlane's "The Wild Places" to whet you're appetite.

    Islay malts are an acquired taste...no point spending £100 for a bottle he won't like!! Any cask strength Speyside malt should go down a treat. Just remind him whisky doesn't age in a bottle, crack it open and enjoy.
