The mini trangia wind shield is no where near as effective as the classic one, though weight and bulk savings are significant.
Effectively it's a pot stand - a separate foil wind shield would help whilst maintaining the benefits of less weight / bulk.

Could you use multiple smaller one bound together? it would be an opportunity to teach some ropework. 2 x 3m or 3 x 2m would be cheaper and easier to source. Maybe try a large hardware store for some pine hand rails?
no issue painting afterwards. Any inevitable little left over bits can be rubbed off with a finger as the bond between silicon and steel isnt actually strong in small pieces - or use fine sand paper if your painting anyway - or as above, wirewool. clean down with white spirit or any other...

First from bottom to 1/3 heigh which is left closed during use to stop ash falling out and opened for easy cleaning.
Second from 1/3 height to top which is used for feeding fire.
