The "What is this bug?" thread

16 months late in posting, but looks like an Alder Beetle Agelastica alni (on Alder).

The "What is this bug?" thread

Several months late in replying, but looks like it could be geological. Would need a closer view of the apparent burrow entrances to be sure.

    What happened to Chocolate Fish?

Thanks nitrambur. :-) I had seen that before but it implied (albeit 3-4 years ago) that ChocoFish was still in business but can't find anything - all the links in that article are dead. :-(

    What happened to Chocolate Fish?

Howdo all, I've been out of it for a while but was in need of another merino wool shirt the other day. However, I noticed that ChocolateFishMerino (whom I use, or used to) is no longer. Just wondering what happened as the lady that ran it all was a pleasure to talk to. Cheers, Scrubby.

    Lizard ID

It's just the Great Crested Newt that has the full protection (not even allowed to handle them without a DEFRA license). Smooth and Palmate Newts just have basic protection, i.e., you're not allowed to deliberately harm or kill them and you're not allowed to sell them as pets, etc.

Which field guide do you use?

Hello Harryhaller, Here's an excerpt from a thread [Recommended fauna & flora ID guides.... (long list)] I set up a while ago: The Wild Flower Key How to identify wild flowers, trees and shrubs in Britain and Ireland Francis Rose and Clare O'Reilly 480 pages. Frederick Warne Books...

if you care about the loss of traditional craft skills read this

Good to see this, and I think there was another site which encouraged traditional crafts - I'll see if I can find it again and post it here. While not exactly traditional crafts, I used to coppice hazel and make hurdles as well as lay hedges and other forms of traditonal countryside...

Why Ray mears should be knighted

Hmmm, I thought about this one. While he deserves the respect and admiration that he has earnt through his work and being a good teacher to one and all I'm not sure that Ray Mears himself would want to accept a knighthood. Bearing in mind the corrupt nature of the system (especially under...

Are we all enjoying the low fuel costs

Hiya Preacherman, Absolutely no worries and no offence was taken at all. I use a saying - "If one has been misread or misheard it's because one didn't write or speak properly in the first place". I'm sure once the right people get together they will come up with the solutions, but they...

A Quest For Signs of Spring

Great post and great kid. Would love to read a story about a trip to the woods from her point of view! Everything is new and exciting. Thank you.

Are we all enjoying the low fuel costs

Hiya Preacherman, Don't misquote me - I said arrogance still grates. As said in my earlier message, I don't mind ignorance as long as people want to be educated. Many people think that anything which appears green is green as told to them by government and the media. However, what appears...

Are we all enjoying the low fuel costs

No worries, I'm not getting too het up about it British Red - I've long been used to ignorance and most are happy to be educated to understand the processes (nothing wrong with that), but when combined with arrogance where people think they know it all and vehemently stand by it when they...

Are we all enjoying the low fuel costs

Another price hike?! - well there's a shock (not). As usual the government is using the excuse of saving the environment by taxing us more on things that we have no choice to use. I'm self-employed and I need my pick-up to work. If I can't afford to use it, my business goes and I end up in...
