You're looking for a crevice in the rock that goes under the rock, partially submerged. Telltale sign will be the first third of the tips of their antennae sticking out in the water. Other signs (crab included) will be broken bits of seashell in a "litter pile" outside of the crevice.

Find a squeezy bottle with a nozzle and put the batter mix in that. It's easier than a tupperware type container to stash in your kit. If you get a freezeable wine bottle sleeve, you can put it around the bottle and wrap it in a towel to keep it cold for longer?
I've progressed from being an Emmet (maybe), I'm now a blow-in who has settled here. Luckily we've had 2 kids since being here so they kind of qualify us a little more.
So I made this from a bamboo pole, a large hook on one end and a weird "squashed butcher's hook/tent peg thing" that I found at my local hardware shop. I hacksawed the opposite end off to give me a straight spike. In hindsight I'll use a 9" nail when I make the next one.

So I made a DIY Lobster trap as well as a DIY Shrimp trap.
It took me a few hours and I went out and set them today in a very deep rockpool at one of my local beaches in Cornwall.
They cost me the grand total of £0.00 as I had most of the ingredients, plus I scavenged the tubs themselves...
