    2nd Knife - No.2 "Purple Reindeer"

Here's my second knife. It's a Scandi style, the blade length is 92mm and the overall length is 194mm. The blade is 4mm 5160, forged by Lord Farquhar, bushcraft style wtih drop point. It's a wonderful blade, I love the weight and the shape, and it arrived hair-popping sharp. I...

    My first knife-making attempt

Thanks for all the comments. Yes, I'm finding out that it's addictive - I'm already planning the next two.. I'll make a sheath for this one at some point but right now I'm waiting on some leather. And to be honest, I get more excited thinking about my next knife than I do about the sheath for...

    My first knife-making attempt

Here's my first custom knife made by me. It's got a Lauri carbon blade, and a walnut and buffalo horn handle. I forgot to measure it so don't have the overall dimensions, but the blade is 77mm long. I'm really pleased with it for a first attempt. Let me know what you think. Photo 1...

Sharpening Beveled Blades With Abrasive Sheets

For anyone interested, I've found this article that clearly explains the difference between the CIMA and FEPA grit-size grading system, along with a lot of info on how to choose which grades of wet and dry to use when going from a coarse regrinding to a polished finish. It also explains the...

    Wood sanding question

Ah ok. In the past I've used cold water to raise the grain. Thanks for the heads up, I was in a 10-minute boiling frame of mind yesterday as I needed to un-epoxy some buffalo horn. A quick dip it is for the spoon.

    Wood sanding question

Thanks for the tips. I might try boiling it to see if that releases some of the grains of W/D, and a cotton cloth when I rub it up again.

    Wood sanding question

Thanks, I've got some synthetic wire wool coming in the post for another project so I may try that. It was wet and dry I was using, which is why I'm surprised (and a bit p***ed off) that it left some of itself behind.

    Wood sanding question

I'm finishing up my second spoon, and I've noticed that there are some very small pieces of wet and dry grit embedded in the wood, probably from the first coarse sanding. Anybody have any ideas on how to get rid of these, other than sanding again, which I imagine will leave a new lot of grit in...

    Am I too Old

No. No more than anyone else there, and that'll only last a day or so anyhow. No. Welcome to BCUK, BTW.

    Correctly using a spoon knife

I used my spoon knife for the first time a week or so ago. Mine had a single bevel on the outside edge. If your knife has the bevel on the outside, you should sharpen it on the outside, not the inside. Mine was fairly sharp already so I gave it a few strokes on a leather strop with some...

    How to season wood

I've not a lot of experience, but I'm in the process of learning and 've done soem research, so here's what I know. In the end, whether the wood will split or not is down to the type of wood and the nature of that particular piece of wood. While we can't control the end result, what we...

    My latest two!

That curly birch on the second knife is staggering. I love it.

    knife handle wood

One technique I read about for microwaving is 30 second bursts at low power, weighing each time with an accurate scale 0.001g, until it no longer changes weight. Takes about four or five goes, if I remember correctly. Everywhere I looked on the Net on how to microwave wood, were warnings...
