This is a short from a great YouTube channel:

Play The Trees - The Bushcraft Flute?

If you have a sturdy piece or two of wire, a fire or hot embers, and a thick glove or pair of pliers you can make a long smallish hole along the axis of a stick/branch/bamboo piece. Heat up the wire in the fire and burn your way into the end of the item. This needs to be done repeatedly and can...

    Stropping compound?

I quite like using cardboard stuck down onto a flat piece of wood as a strop. It works particularly well with compounds that are wax based. It doesn’t have much give at all, so it reduces the chances of rounding over an edge. It is handy for odd blade shapes too: v-gouges, incannel gouges...

    What did you buy today?

She might also invest in a Geiger counter as well. Uranium was used as a colouring/brightening agent in some 20th century glassware :)

    What did you buy today?

I can’t remember who suggested Polymath Products, but an idle surf around their website has resulted in a smallish spend. They do seem to specialise in those small things that will be really useful when out and about…….

    Dremel bits.

Maybe ask if anyone’s got an old/used Dremel flex shaft to sell? An old one of these?

    Old Fashioned Truck Stops

My most local place is Morgan’s Transport Cafe, on the A38 at Burlescombe, not far from the M5 (perhaps a mile?), and on the Somerset/Devon border. It’s only open until about 1.30 in the afternoon, but sells the usual fare and is a good place for a bacon butty and a cuppa if I’ve been out early...

    Service Charge - Enforced Tipping

It irks me (and the missus). I’m happy to tip for good or exceptional service, or maybe even just a smile and a welcoming approach from from the server.

So what do you all drink these days?

Session beer when Spoofing, usually Otter bitter 3.8%. Sheppy’s cider when thirsty at home. Malt whiskey of various styles when sipping in front of the woodburner, currently Bowmore 12yo.

    Bow Question. Ask the audience

I would say not, unless the compound was a very low poundage bow. You won’t have any of the mechanical multiplication that the long string and cams give to help you.

    Best bushcraft trousers?

I’ve had a pair of these for about 6/7 years now: https://www.varusteleka.com/en/product/sarma-cargo-pants/55318 I use them for most of my outdoor non-motorcycling time - beating, fishing, walking, rabbiting etc etc. They have proven themselves worth every penny. No loose seams, no holes, no...

    Thoughts on Premium Bonds

The wife and I have some/enough each. We win something most months and that pays for treats like meals out. On good months we get weekends away out of the winnings. The Bonds are also very flexible - easy to manage online, easy to add to, easy and quick to get your money back. As previously...

Leather reconditioning - any leather workers got recommendations?

On anything thicker than so called calfskin I’m an advocate for Fiebings Mink Oil. It does darken items but certainly restores flexibility and to be some extent water repellence. The treatment seems to keep leather in a good state for some time - in the order of years, helping to avoid constant...

    What are you currently reading?

NB: not particularly bushcrafty, but… Yep. I’m retired and find that a lot of what TPTV broadcasts is absolutely classic. Well worth recording on our digibox and then watching at our leisure. Doubly so when the programmes on the more established channels appear to be in some kind of death...
