We bought the cottage solely due to the fact it came with a dilapidated pole barn that had the potential to be rebuilt into my workshop. Every place I have lived I have had a workshop in one form or another. To me it's more important than the house.

I use one of the Dutch army 20mm foam ones which I have cut to my length then made a sit mat out of the off cut. I got fed up with air mats getting punctures as I sleep on the ground. It's not as comfy as an air mat but it is very good for insulation.

This is my cave which I built in 2021. Embarrassingly it's a bit of a mess and cluttered at the moment.
