    Allan Blade Scandi PackPal

Well I just was given one by a friend. What a great blade. This thing is perfect on wood. The maple handle scales came contoured to make this one of the more comfortable and secure little knives I have used. The sheath is excellent. I unbolted the vertical belt slot and...

    wanting machete+wild campspots

I like the shorter machetes for the most part. They work as a long knife but have less blade weight than some larger knives. I have; the Martindale. It weighs 530 grams the Ontario 12" Econo at 340 grams the Ontario 18" Military at 540 grams and a Military 18" I cut down to 12" and...

    Magnifying Glass

The pics above were taken in the middle of the Sonoran Desert. A 10 cm x 15 cm fresnel lens (flat plastic reading lens from bookstore) will set almost anything on fire. I have lit up all manner of try tinder and even cotton t-shirts in seconds. The bigger the lens, the more heat it can focus.

    Magnifying Glass

It's a Dozier Companion shown here with my SAK Farmer. It is a great blade for hiking/fishing etc. Nice EDC size.

    Magnifying Glass

I carry a 10 cm x 15 cm fresnel lens in my kit at all times. This photo is not the best but you can see the shadow of the lens and the beginning of the immediate flame I got. When I set this up I intended for it to take about 20 seconds to light up but within 5 seconds of placing the lens over...

    GB Wildlife

Alick, I found some Elkskin gloves at the local hardware store but now they don't have them. I found the Deerskin gloves at a cowboy supply house not far from here. The nice thing about either of those hides is, if you get them wet they will dry supple and not become stiff like cow hide. Cow...

    Method of Carry

Peter I don't know if you can buy a clip alone from Benchmade. Good question. I took this one off of an old AFCK where I did a modification which went terribly wrong. It is fun to take an inexpensive Opie into your home shop for some improvments. I did give it a flat place so the clip...

    Method of Carry

This is a great thread. I like all the different ways that everyone carries and at times use some of them as well. I do carry a Mora on my ruck. It is easy to reach with the pack on and I don't take the ruck off and walk away. I also back it up with some sort of pocket knife. As for the Opie...

    Method of Carry

Yes, and the knives pictured above are actually two different Doziers. One is the Companion and one is the A G Russel Personal Utility. I really like his sheaths. Not necessarily. I carry the Mountainsmith Wraith for a daypack these days and there are attachment points right on the hip...

    Method of Carry

Horizontal carry is one of my favorites. It stays out of the way when you sit and is always ready at the cross draw. Also a horizontal sheath turns into the perfect upside down vertical sheath for pack strap carry when on the move.

    Bowdrill E-book

Kath, I think you are better off making your own out of the materials that surround you. The reason being, it will make you more proficient at finding the right materials and you will be better served knowing what works in your own geography. I tend to collect materials everywhere I go. I try...

    When making sparks with firesteel...

I like you won't use a good blade for sparking the Firesteel. I find the newer version striker that comes with the Swedish Firesteels does a great job without tearing up the firesteel.

I always wear either Elkskin or Deerskin gloves. They are like a supple second skin. Too many wicked splinters waiting to drive in deep. Gloves are like boots for the hands.

    what hat do you wear?

Why, a light weight Tilley of course. I have both the LT3 and I believe the one pictured is the LT5. It has the more generous brim. I like them both.

What compass do you use and why?

I like the Suunto DP-65 global as well. It is made by Recta. You can adjust the declination which is very important to me. I also like the gun site style system. I find it easiest to sight with. At 57 grams it is very light weight for what you get. It works in all 5 magnetic zones...
