    DIY ice fishing rod

I thought I would put up a couple of photos of an ice fishing rod that I made, using a broken fishing rod, reindeer horn and sallow root bur.

    Ice fishing premier

Yes it is Mesquite. The fishing line goes over the screw at the end, prior to going down into the ice hole.

    Ice fishing premier

Last Saturday was the premier for ice fishing in one of the lakes in our village. My 10 year old daughter was the first to catch a fish after just 5 minutes. An Arctic Char. I also caught 2, but mine were under the limit of 35cms, so I had to put them back.

    Greetings from Lapland.

I'm doing ok thanks. Got divorced a few months ago, so I'm living alone in the forest now. My 10 year old daughter comes to stay every weekend. After a back operation a few years ago, I'm not as active as I used to be. How is life with you?

My life stripped away from me

S_orry to hear this Jon. I'm on MSN if you want to have a chat about it. Jon, are the landlord and estate manager aware of your work and the things you produce? If not, I would suggest you/your parents try to meet with them and show them some of your work (including anything you've had...

It's unlikely that they will work well fresh I'm afraid. You'll need to cut some and dry them for a few days.

You would need to try it Hugh. It certainly comes in nice long lengths;)

I had dried the sedge for 5 days prior to working with them. You'll find the cuts are even worse when you start working with the stuff:eek: Dried stems of Juncus/rush are also good to use for stitching the coils.

    One for Jonr

Have you tried using your sedge yet? I've found that the sedge makes a much neater looking basket, but cuts your hands very easily:censored: I twisted the sedge as I coiled it and then stitched through the coils to secure them. I made my needle from Box Wood this time. Unlike the...
