Tarp/Tent Pegs

  • Hey Guest, Early bird pricing on the Summer Moot (29th July - 10th August) available until April 6th, we'd love you to come. PLEASE CLICK HERE to early bird price and get more information.
Im sure we have all lost a tent peg after someone has walked into your guy lines ( certain people on more than one occasion) or you have placed it on the ground and when you turn your back it has mysteriously camoflaged itself.

Does anyone have any good tips on how to find them once they have disappeared? Or does anyone have something they attach to the pegs to make it easy to find and won't slip off?

Sudden flash of inspiration!!!
You can get the packs of louminous (?) guy lines quite cheaply these days. How about cutting short lengths and tieing loops to your pegs? Brightly coloured by day and reflective under tourch light by night.

This probably won't stop certain persons tripping on your guys, but it may prevent further loss?

I’m kind of lucky in that I’ve not lost any tent pegs because of people tripping over the guy lines. Nor from forgetting where I put them.
But my tip would be, carve your tent pegs out of willow, doesn’t matter if you lose them, you don’t have to carry them, and if you camp in the same place year on year, you’ll find them next year as there will be little willow trees around your camp site.

I attach my pegs to my guy lines when put up my tarp. I also use big wooden pegs as I'm normally on sandy soil, you can't miss them when they're pulled out. Never lost one, or had someone tripping over a guy line and taking out a peg ... Well, it happened to me a few times (now moved to day glow guy lines) - but that doesn't count ;)

Interesting ideas in here. Not sure if tying the luminous string to the peg would help, when these pegs go the have come off of the line and depends on how its done that it may take the luminous string tag with it.

resnikov - surely I would be safer with a metal detector? :p

The yellow electricians tape sounds like a good idea.

I do have the luminous guy lines that I picked up from Tesco a while back, but I have never got round to tying them on and setting them up

I'm using Alpkit pegs of one type or another these days, they're coloured red plus they have a loop of red cord tied on too.

Use steel pegs and carry and small old speaker magnet?!

I'm not sure about the luminous length of line tied to pegs, after one use it'll get muddy and won't be luminous.

All I do is take a handful of spare pegs, and look for lost ones! If your pegging your guy out in a similar place/length/andgle, you'll likely find your peg. If your at a commonly used campsite, you can normally come away with more pegs than you came with anyway!

Hard to describe but here goes - I use Y shaped pegs (when looked at end-on). I have drilled a small hole in one of the fins to take a loop of paracord.

I will try the luminous loops out during next season and see how they fare with regard to dirt, wear and ongoing visibility.

Put RFID tags on all of your kit.
Then link a scanner to your smartphone with database and inventory apps.
When packing, you can compare your luggage with your kit list: anything missing?
When you repack everything at the end of your trip, you can check if anything is still lying around somewhere.
More possibilities:
Collect data to analyze if there are certain items you lose more than others.
Scan items every time you use them; on your next trip, leave out unused items.
Combine databases to find out that people tend to 'lose' titanium tent pegs every time Armie goes camping with them...
Create a forum where people talk about this stuff, and which ones are the coolest RFID tags, without actually going out and using any of it.

:)

Colour your pegs bright blue!

Yellow dissapears, blue is still more visible in the ground. I've had good results with blue acrylic eggshell on ti and ally. Blue pvc tape is good too.
