I see that according to the popular press we are all going to be a lot safer come August when all those ne'er do wells surrender their Ninja swords. Looking at the regulations, if it is a centimetre shorter or a centimetre longer then it is still legal to own. How ridiculous is that? I cannot imagine any of us are going to be able to sleep any safer in our beds after August. I just continue to hope that all these gangstas and roadmen don't suddenly discover Hema and somebody gets stabbed with a Wakefield hanger or a 1795 pattern sabre, then we are all doomed.

I’m not sure how I’ll cope without smoothies either :(

I can’t see this thread lasting mate, it’s going to spark too much “sharpened pencil” type comment and personal opinion. As bushcraft people, we may need a Skrama, but swords are irrelevant.

Unfortunately these bans are entirely arbitrary, if somebody gets decapitated or de limbed with a bill hook there will be a public outcry and the politicians will get busy with a new ban. I have never had any desire or intention to own a "ninja sword" and certainly do not miss zombie knives but it is a slippery slope nonetheless.

And here we are talking of people getting decapitated and de limbed already. Take the fantasies somewhere else, there is nothing to be gained by this sort of discussion on BCUK!

OK, I'm going to bite.

I can see both points of view- the "it's the slippery slope" vs "well we don't use swords" perspectives.

I would say that both pespectives have some truth, and indeed the history of the legislation around edged things has been interesting, it was only thanks to sustained lobbying that we didn't end up with the zombie knives legislation inadvertently sweeping things like billhooks into scope.

Don't underestimate what a combination of over-egged media reports, poor legal drafting and half-asleep politicians can (albeit inadvertently) achieve..... ;):banghead:

There’s already a thread on this here:

No apology necessary :)

Easy to miss threads. Just thought people might like the wider context/discussion.
Indeed, without talking about gangstas, road men sticking people with road pins, decapitation, removal of limbs with billhooks. It’s an utter trolls fantasy designed to kick up a long winded thread of miffed people making up rubbish about sharpened pencils doing just as much damage. It wears thin after 20 or so years, this same discussion.

Stick with the actual law. Which wasn’t ‘lobbied’ for, we were asked to fill in a questionnaire, it was pointed out people use tools and some blades require a hole so they can be stacked and don’t warp during heat treat. Nobody except some companies selling knives clearly as weapons, and perhaps some idiots who use them to intimidate or wound in gang culture has had any ‘right’ removed.

If my UKPK was 5mm longer it would be illegal to carry without question as UK legal. A length does need to be set in law. The legal processes have been referred to as the slippery slope for as long as I can remember, and so far none of our needs, activities or usages have been affected in the slightest. There is no reduction in rights or dumbing down going on, just alarmist fantasy that completely ignores Kiri, who is in the legal profession and been keeping people informed of the FACTS without fuss since the early 2000’s on BritishBlades.

Much more to the point is which blade grind is best, scandi, convex, hollow, scandi with secondary, or high sabre? Discuss… :lmao:

Some people call cycle commuters and other cyclists who go out in dodgy weather wearing all black Lycra clobber ninjas. The way they just appear from nowhere to get under your wheels.. Sorry, I don't mean that being a cycle commuter myself. I just think all black and lights off in that dark hours of heavy rain is a bit ninja-ish. I at least wear my orange Paramo and have an orange, reflective bag cover on with lights.

I do wonder if the cycle ninjas carry a long sword though.

Each to their own but I’ve never seen the appeal of most samurai/ninja swords.

I’m sure the real deal is nicer, but the ones I’ve encountered seem to be those plastic handled novelties with dragons painted on.

Could someone please post an picture of an actual ninja sword. I am struggling to understand what is being banned and I would also like to know what they look like in case I want one :) xxxx

Banning won't stop anything.
Its just window dressing to make themselves look and feel as if they are doing something to keep us decent citizens safe.
For instance, Guns are banned, unless you have a licence, but the gangsta types still use them. In fact statistics on gun related crimes have actualy gone up in recent years.
A few years ago a legal gun owner shot and killed his wife close to where I live.
Another chap in our town who has mental health problems tried to buy a machete recently in our local huntin' shootin' fishin' shop. They refused to sell one to him as he's known to be unstable. It was reported and police found he already had two stashed in the house. No idea where he'd got them from and he wouldn't say. If somebody wants something nefarious, there will always be an underground trade in banned items.
Take drugs for instance. Has banning worked?
Did prohibition work in the states?
So explain how this ninja sword thing will work, are these gangsta types suddenly going to rush to the polly station and hand them in? Personally, I doubt it. They don't care a hoot for the law anyway.
