They'll be dining on that story for years about how they 'survived' the jungle yet, somehow, never actually adopted any survival skills bar the (very)common knowledge that all rivers will eventually lead to the sea.

Never has the saying 'Being lost is a state of mind' rung more true.

They're being hailed as gritty survivors when in reality they got a bit disorientated and then panicked big time, completely lost it and were convinced the jungle was going to kill them at any minute.
What is it with some people who think that if you are separated from modern technology then you will inevitably die?
As for saying watching Mears saved his life, what a joke! If he'd really watched his shows he wouldn't have kept stumbling on making his situation worse. And the fact that water flows downhill is not secret survival information!

Bear in mind they only knew that because one of them remembered something off tv. THe knowledge can't be common round their parts. The Island was only 18 x 10 miles too. A days walk from any coast.

I'm sure that most kids who attend primary school would know that ALL rivers eventually flow to the sea.

It's an entry-level Geography topic.

These folks beggar belief.

No, speaking as a person who did A level Geog.

All rivers DO NOT lead to the sea...

...Some lead to lakes....

...Many to other rivers....

...Some even peter out in a desert.

Just goes to show it's not always survival of the fittest, it's be a jammy beggar aswell.

Survival of the fittest refers to the species and not to individuals and any individual that has reproduced has done what's necessary for the species. Fittest refers to fit as in a suit of clothes (does it "fit") rather than ones physical or mental state of health.

It seems as if everything, just everything that they did, apart from following the stream downward, was wrong.

But they were doing something right. They never gave up - they kept on moving, they were adamant, despite their exhaustion, that something would turn up, that there was something that they could do to save themselves.

I think they showed the very basic qualities that are essential to survival - don't give up.

The ones leading to lakes have an outflow from the lake somewhere. The ones leading to rivers still lead to the sea.

The desert one would shaft ya though :D

How the hell did they have no water in a rainforest? Followed a river but had no water. Muppets. They could have easily explored the jungle for 3 or 4 weeks no bother, but were near certain death after 2 days?

That's the funniest bit! :)

With a machete, matches and metal mug they could have been reasonably comfortable for many days in that environment, with as little as one-hour of specialist training. Muppets indeed, just for getting into that situation!

I think that part of the problem is people are taught so much about the jungle as being a pleasant, hospitable enviroment.

Wow breath taking scenery and yes they must have been pretty stupid to attempt that climb in flip flops!

Funny you should say that, I came across a couple on the Ben Nevis Summit (Which was covered in Deep Snow at the time and it was raining pretty bad!!) wearing pretty much the same kit, although I have to admit they had cagooules on!!

Some people are just plain dumb!!

Another thing that's crossed my mind is how this was reported.
There they are quaffing their champers in a jacuzzi, all smiles, and the story portraying them as intrepid survivors.
Not a word about their stupidity. No criticism in sight.
Would that be because they are photogenic middle class city types?
I wonder how it would have been reported if they were shop floor factory workers from Hull?
