It is a good walk, and the discussion about the architecture, love it or loathe it, has been interesting.
I don't see the political or religious bit though Nick,
I don't think the Vatican has anything to do with the property; is it not still owned by the local church authorities ? Personally I wouldn't spend anything to conserve the building, but the owners have as much right to apply for grants as anyone else in similar situations, and if the local folk value it, well that's up to them.

cheers,
Toddy

come on nick please dont be so touchy, my lastest post was tongue in cheek northern humour. Mind I must say I find it hard to place the conctetre semiary alongside the likes of the "colleseum, pyramids, forth rail bridge, eiffel tour" etc  wether they need fixing or not. I dont like modernist architecture, because of its assertion that every thing that wasnt modernist was crappie and should be got rid of; it ruthlessly mocked traditional styles including popular vernacular ones, and tried to destroy as much traditional building stock as possible, replacing it with a international socialist intellerctual theory of architecture, that wasnt grounded in popular sentiment or common sense, just what a few clever sorts imposed on the masses for what was alleged to be social betterment but what actually turned out to be a disarster :) .
