Here is my offereing

Not pretty (But not designed to be, all will become clear)

SSL20396.jpg

The handle is fat pine (Maya/resin heavy pine whaterver you want to call it)

The point of this large ugly handle is this..

Scrape away some of the handle into fine "Dust"

SSL20397.jpg

Collect the dust into a little pile

SSL20400.jpg

Spark you steel into the pile and "hey presto"

SSL20401.jpg

There you have it a constant supply of tinder and a steel all in one!

As you can see the handle is "consumable" so there is little point in prettying it up to much!

Here's a light-hearted one:

fc1.jpg

It has four high-powered white LED's to illuminate one's tinder in the dark.

Runs off a lithium CR123A cell, so should have a shelf-life of ten years and a runtime of about 24 hours.

Case is a brass tube and you just twist to turn it on. Should be pretty much waterproof too; o-ring sealed!

fc2.jpg

It's bright enough to walk around a pitch-black house with.

Rick.

Some great work on here :You_Rock_

Are there any other enteries in the pipeline?

Cheers,

Phil.

it's the end of the month already! I'm not going to have anything done. I was wworking on a fancy laminated handle but other things needed doing. Maybe next time...:(

Edit.

Here's one I did earlier though.

I realy like the feel of the knucklebone style handle. It's in rock maple and finished with danish oil.

Hi all,

As per the rules: -

Each entry must be a single photograph showing the firesteel in question.

Could those of you who have posted several pictures please let me know, via this thread, which picture you want used for the poll please?

Many thanks in advance,

Phil.

Hi Phil

As I said earlier, my pictures are just for show as I have two Fire Pistons already, one of them being the type offered as a prize . No chance of winning anyway looking at the high standards entered for the competition.

If I did enter it would have been the Antler Papoose one.

Cheers

George

I finally managed to do something with my firesteels :D

I had some antlers knocking around and have been meaning to do this for ages and finally got an hour or two to myself today

Managed to get a nice tight fit for the steels into the antler :-

antler_steel_2.jpg

Cutting gooves into the inserted part of the firesteel with a hacksaw, to give the glue something to bond to, was an interesting exercise!

All glued together with Mitre Mate - wonderful stuff ;)

Cheers,

Phil.
