Had a go at making a handle for a Ferrocium rod that I bought of Ebay. Put a bit of thought into it an have came up with a firesteel complete with two stages of tinder handy.

The rod is handled in well seasoned Hawthorn found in our local woods which is hand carved, sanded and treated with Tung oil. Really pleased with the finish that the Hawthorn got after 24 hours soak in the Tung oil. This is then wrapped with a couple of metres of Jute twine from Wilkos. The final wrap is cut down Mountain bike inner tube (two layers). Idea being that when you wish to light a fire you remove the inner tube, cut of a few inches of twine. Then fluff up twine and cut a small slice of inner tube. The Jute twine easily takes a spark and the small piece of inner tube burns from the flames given allowing your foraged kindling to light easily. The Inner tube also seals very well helping to keep the twine dry.

Works really well an am very pleased with it.Firesteel1.jpgfiresteel2.jpgfiresteel3.jpg
