Favorite and good fire wood

Yep, I have a small stash of red cedar logs that I split up into fine kindling to light fires in the wet - it's almost like balsawood and weighs next to nothing.

However, none of those trees are particularly common here in the UK

I’m surprised nobody has mentioned holly yet. It’s density and hot, long burn seems to rival most things I’ve found. My burner burns most hardwoods and sometimes larch if I’m really stuck, mainly because I help a friend manage his woodland in exchange for timber and firewood. The Larch is probably the best softwood IMO.

The Leylandii I’ve been storing for a while has been quite a surprise. By all rights it should be a horrible firewood - soft, often resinous, low calorie but the stuff I’ve been burning has been great - fairly hot coals, decent heat, low smoke. Best of all its the one wood that is the most available to me.

Red Alder. Good fire wood, easy to split when green, excellent for smoking meat.

Here too, alder is most often used for smoking fish or meat.
