Call me weird if you want, but I eventually managed to dig the splinters out of my thumb and stuck them onto a bit of white card, then got one of our pollen counters to have a look under the microscope and they are indeed tiny shards of flint - not steel.

But I think I am correct in saying that the sparks that ignite the tinder are actually shards of glowing metal, not flint?
