a bit of help please

hi

last weekend i made a english longbow out of pine. and tonight i tried to string it but the string is way to slack and was about quater of an inch away from the bow i use a bowyers knot on one end then a loop that was already in the string. My bow is 74" and the string is 72"-74" nock to nock can anyone tell me what i have done wrong or give me any guidance on how to fix it?

Take up the slack by adjusting the Bowyers knot.

Well, unless you know something that is new to generally accepted archery wisdom, either leave that bow low strung, or take lots of photos now 'cause its not long for this world. Most pine is very weak and a narrow, deap English bow is going to be asking it to do a lot of work. At best it will take a lot of set/string follow (be a permanent C shape) or it could just break.

Anyway, about stringing.

The way to up the brace height is to re-tie the bowyer's knot so that the other loop is about 4 inches from the far nock. The loop is slipped over the end of the bow so that it can be slid up and down the limb while the bowyers knot is affixed to the other end of the bow. It is often recommended to have the bowyers knot on the upper limb and the loop on the lower.

For stringing, there is debate over whether to use the step through method or the push-pull method.
