read about it the other day on another site, it's a Dakota fire pit !!:D

Does it work as well as i am led to believe ? I bet it was roaring along with all that wind ?

John I made this one at 90 degrees to the wind only because it was gale force, i have found in the past if you make them with the wind blowing straight in it causes flying sparks and embers, not to mention it acts like a forge ! :)

i made a pit like this before any they make quite some heat. i was told to line the pit with clay to generate more heat but i think i put in too much as it slid off and destroyed my fire. :(

Davey round these parts there is no mud its all clay ! i tell you digging round here is hard work, you are right though when the clay hardens it holds the heat in. In fact you could probbly use it as an oven . :)

Andy it works very well indeed !

The site i mentioned before was with the guy using green sticks over the fire hole to use it similar to a grill from a bbq to put his pots on etc, i suppose eventually the green wood would burn but then just put more green sticks on, nice work mate, missus wouldn't be best pleased if i started digging the lawn up to try it though, lol.:)

The annoying fact is that most of this week has been breezy, and on the friday it is meant to be calm, just when I am going camping to test out a tent.

That looks a good fire. I remember doing something similar, but quicker, with a fire in a slight depression. Basically, a newspaper was unfolded and held so it channelled the wind into the fire, worked well.
