2nd attempt at spoon carving

This is my second attempt at making a spoon from silver birch with a pen knife

i haven't carved the bowl because, i do not own a hook knife, but once funds allow i will finish it off and linseed oil it

Not sure but I think Linseed is toxic, use Walnut oil. You could also make your own hook knife using an old saw blade.

you could also use rapeseed oil, raw linseed oil. cheers

That's waaaaay better than my first attempts, very original indeed!

I sometimes uses olive oil and it's fine too...

It's the boiled linseed that you can't use as its got other stuff added, but raw linseed is what I use. It takes a good few weeks to fully harden but i was using mine before then, you just get a slight taste of the oil, which was fine.
Walnut oil works well, but only as long as the person using it doesn't have a nut allergy!

Tat2trev, I can't find the youtube vid I was thinking of yet, he uses a reciprocating saw blade, ground and bent to shape, ugly but effective. Also found this vid while looking. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_iA3eYsyGU Let us know how you get on.

excellent to watch but the problem i have is, ive recently moved bk to the uk from cyprus and have no tools to make such a knife.Which is a a massive dissapointment to me but thanks for the link bud
