    What size is your pack?

4 panniers, totalling about 75-80 litres. I don't carry anything, the bike does it all. No petrol/diesel/gas, just leg work. Cycle touring, the hobby of the future. 1/4 the speed of a car*, with more accessability than a backpacker** * I can get rolling at 15mph+ - I don't know of...

    Tarp and Hammock Tutorial

Thanks for the tutorial, it will help a lot when I go away next month. I am also removing the plastic adjusters fom my tent as I no longer need them thanks to your advice. Should save myself a few grams?

big lads looking for a sleeping bag on a budget?

I saw one of those in a camp shop in (Kingston Upon) Hull - or 'ull as the locals call it. It looked good and I went to grab one of the packed ones, and it was MASSIVE!!!! Far too big for me (bike touring), but would be ok for people not carrying the world on their back/bike.

One for the 'swingers' out there...

Cheers Ogri. :D I would love to try before I buy, as spending a load of dosh only to find I don't like it is not in my plan. ...mmmmmmm???? Any East Yorks people willing to show a newbie the 'ropes' if you excuse the pun?

One for the 'swingers' out there...

Thanks for that. I am going to the Netherlands for a 10 day cycle tour in May. I will be taking my 1 (person?) man tent and a DD Tarp for a bit of living 'space'. I am toying with the idea of a DD hammock to compliment my set up, and use it where there are trees available, and ground-hug in...

.....how do you sleep in a hammock if you 'traditionally' sleep on your side or your stomach? Are they only any good for people who kip on their backs? Can people like me convert?

    Going Dutch (pic heavy)

Nice trip Johan. I arrive in the Netherlands on 13th May for a 10 day/1200km cycle trip 'Ronde van Nederlands'. I will be on the lookout for some 'wild camp' sites.

    First Kuksa

Nothing to critique there, it's brilliant.

    Any bikers here???

Exactly. Cycle touring is the new backpacking. Faster than walking, zero polution, accesses areas cars can't, and has freedom to go away from train/bus routes where backpackers tend to herd up like sheep.

    Any bikers here???

I have a '99 CBR 900 RRX, but don't ride much any more, just do cycle touring instead.

    City living challenge

I totally agree, and I couldn't have put it better. What makes someone who's homeless want to sleep rough in Peckham? A few coupons from the daily star, and they can be in the south of France in a few days? It amuses me that winos choice or beer is Tennants - anyone see the irony? Go in...

    Having problems making Char cloth

I've just done a batch in a syrup tin. Hole punched in the top with a tool off my SAK, and the placed on the griddle of my chimnea. Worked a treat, but I didn't plug the hole afterwards? Still worked though. :)

    Hello from East Yorkshire

Thanks all. Just been out and had a go at making char cloth. Brilliant results first time. Made loads, so that has pride of place in my fire tin.
