Show us your Bushcraft Hat (hopefully will end up pic heavy)

Dave, That looks like the Akubra Cattleman, a good hat with a nice broad brim. Still in production today.

    Travel type mug with infuser

I have a Culinare cup that fits what you describe. Great for coffee, haven't tried tea. This was just the first place that had them on a quick search. https://www.coffeecompany.com.au/accessories/coffee-accessories/double-walled-plunger-mug

Why are bushcraft knives, and survival knives so different?

After reading this thread I decided to have a look at my copy of 'The 10 Bushcraft Books' by Richard Graves to see what he had to say about a suitable knife for bushcraft. Here is what he had to say: "For this work of bushcraft all that is needed is a sharp cutting implement: knife, axe or...

    Offroad Bicycle Lights

I've found Ay Up lights to be pretty good. The kit I got came with a head band so I can even use the lights for Rogaining. Certainly a step up from my old Petzl.

Long driving trip - what to pack?

If you're going to be doing any walking in forested areas away from the 'burbs don't forget to take some vegemite. A couple of dabs behind the ears will keep the drop bears away.

Long driving trip - what to pack?

... and make sure to carry it in a number of separate containers just in case one gets a hole in it.. not all your eggs in one basket and all that. "Aids to survival" put out by the WA police has a good list of suggested basics for outback travel. It can be downloaded from this forum or more...

    SAS Windpoof smock bargain

I came across this apparent bargain for a Platatac SAS windproof smock in desert Auscam. Don't know anything about the quality but the price looks good. Don't know how it'd convert to pounds or what the postage would be like but thought there might be some out there who might be interested.

What weight do you carry when you go hiking?

On my last overnighter about 30kg. It may seem heavy but I was carrying my gear and my daughters gear plus water for us as well as extra water for a friend and her two boys. Waters the killer when it comes to weight here is Oz.

    does anyone use putties

Here in Western Australia when out bush in tick country I tuck my trousers into my socks and use sock protectors such as those below. This keeps most of the blighters at bay.

DD Frontline Tutorial (inc Karabiner mod)

This setup looks remarkably similar to how I used to set up my Frontline hammock. It has been interesting to note in a recent thread of people showing pics of their hammock setups that the DD's more often than not have this taught horizontal setup. After reading a bit about how others setup...

Advice on modifying my DD Travel hammock

I can't actually remember how my DD Frontline arrived but I do remember the webbing that came with it was pretty useless. My most recent setup for this hammock is some climbing accessory cord through the end of the hammock ending in a steel ring at each end. I've attached a structural ridge line...

    Kit List 25+kgs

It sounds like your young one is at a similar stage to mine. I wouldn't worry too much about the weight provided you can carry it easily. Keep the distance reasonable and you shouldn't have any problems. I sometimes laugh at those crowing about how light their packs are when for an extended trip...

    Ultralight Trekking

For a tarp I'd recommend a Warbonnet Outdoors Superfly (http://warbonnetoutdoors.com/tarps.php). Similar dimensions and weight to the one mentioned and pictured above but with built in doors so you can make yourself a truly weatherproof structure. If you're not interested in the doors and want...

    hammock or tent?

If you're asking about hammocks then I'm assuming you'll be camping in areas where you can use them. My first hammock was a DD Frontline. A very nice piece of gear and a vast improvement on sleep quality compared to the tents, bivvis and swags I've used before. Seeing as I spend 2-3 months a...

    hammock or tent?

If you want a good and entertaining introduction to hammocks and what they are capable of you should check out the videos produced by a guy known as Shug. http://www.youtube.com/user/shugemery#p/ Even if you're not into hammocks the videos are entertaining viewing.

    Alternatives to this tent?

The best alternative to a tent is a hammock. Seriously. A DD plus tarp would fit your budget. Once you've tried a hammock you'll avoid ground dwelling whenever possible :D

Where did you get that hat?

Sorry doesn't answer your question but I'd just leave it as is. These sort of imperfections just add character IMHO.

    Hammocks

Having got a DD Frontline and just received a Warbonnet Blackbird 1.0 Dbl I'd go for the Blackbird. It has a better finish to the DD, the mozzie net setup is better IMHO and there's the shelf for putting stuff in.
