    Leather lace "permanent" knot

    I've made myself a leather overstrike protector for my axe and done a simple "shoe" lace with leather lacing along the back but I can't think of any small knots suitable for finishing it off. Obviously, a bow's just not suitable. Any suggestions?

    Anyone know about parangs?

    I'm considering making myself a parang, I've done a handful of knives but nothing on this scale so it's a new challenge for me (mostly keeping it straight during heat treatment, I expect). Anyway, I'll most likely use a 500mm length of steel (so, about 16" blade) unless anyone knows a reason...

    Planning Scotland canoe trip later in the year

    Please move if this isn't really the place... I couldn't decide First of all, hello everyone! I'm an old member returning after some 8 years away so please be gentle I find myself in quite a fortunate position this year and I'm aiming to make the most of it; the girlfriend's gone...

    Can of worms..

    HaHa, I'm about to open a BIG one :ban: Not aimed at everybody here but something troubles me about some of you "bushcrafters" Kit Frankly, I'm surprised some of you don't invent a fold-up caravan to take with you :eek: I've seen alsorts sofar, Tents, huge teepees (sometimes...

    dakota hole fire

    As suggested, I gave this a go today and have a few comments: There it is, I dug a hole about 18" deep and about a foot wide for the fire. As it happened, I forgot to grab a trowel when I left home so made a digging stick from a wrist thick "log" by cutting a "flat" on one end with my axe...

    Squirrels

    Anybody tried them, eating them that is? I'm sure this'll be a can of worms but it's part of the whole bushcraft life. I've recently discovered I can quite easily get squirrels in "my" wood, it's over run with them! I've heard they're good eating but they say that about rabbits and I...

    Strange ferret question

    This one's gonna seem a bit odd but bare with me, I'll go right into detail because it's the only way I can expect an accurate answer: I'm a little concerned about my dad, he's had a "chesty" cough since the start of december, he's not coughing anything up it's dry - it's just the persistance...

    Bow Making help

    I'm not winning with bow making, The bigest problem seems to be that I'm not "up to speed" with winter tree i.d'ing. Anyway, I've tried three times now, once with birch (hopeless) once with something I'm unsure about (smooth blue / grey bark) and yesterday and today with what I think was ash...

    My next in the making

    As promised in Stanley lake's thread; What do you think, all opinions welcome. As you may know I've gone and hurt myself so may be a while before I get the scales on it but I'll show you the finished knife when I'm done. Oh, I'd like some light (ish) coloured scales for it if anyone...

    Got an axe today and......

    Got a small (1.5lb) axe today, I've used them before but not for a while. Anyway, I felt it would be useful bushcraft-wise so I got a cheap one to try to start with, only cost me £3 but it was truly blunt. 30mins in the garage and it was plenty sharp enough. So the next job was to try it out on...

    Bowdrill - first attempt

    had my first go at this today, I stopped pretty quick as it was more of a trial run than anything. I started off by cutting a chunk of birch, about 4"dia and 5"long which I split about a third off for the hearth. I cut a notch at the edge of this and a notch right in the middle of the other...

    scales

    Got a new knife in mind, possibly a pair and the cogs are whiring; Wouldn't it be nice to go fetch the wood for the scales from the woods and turn tree / branch into scales!? Firstly, I don't know much about this - seasoning etc. I know a lot of the standing wood seems well seasoned, it's...

    preparing eels?

    I've been out this morning and found there's a lake (pond) in the woods that I didn't know about.:D I wouldn't really expect there to be any "fish" in there but there might be eels- would you think? Working on the assumption that there is or could be, I may well try some bushcraft style...

    need a project

    can someone suggest a "goal" for me next time I go to the woods please (probably tomorow). I'm really enjoying having a wander in the woods lately, I've got really good with the firesteel even in poor conditions - mainly because I enjoy making fire :D I'd like to try friction methods but...

    out again

    I'm always out and about mee:rolleyes: Well, today I got myself a folding saw, They're fantastik! I only used it for firewood today but can see it having endless other uses, it even felled a tree! (dead, and about 6" dia) fairly easily. Best £13.31 I've spent in ages, I only wish I'd got...

    deer;

    My new stomping ground is covered in evidence of deer - I've seen them, and their tracks - there's loads of sign of them. I don't know much about them except generally around here they tend to be muntjack. I spent the afternoon in the woods, nice fire on the go, just generally relaxing when I...

    I've looked but not found much so sorry if this has been asked a lot. I've got a dd travel hammock and two crabs, can anyone tell me the best way to put them in - and how to do it please?

    Wicca's new knife;

    I hope he doesn't mind me posting this, i'm that pleased with it though I had to show someone! Basicly, I put a thread up on here suggesting I make knives for people - pretty much to their spec and perhaps not quite perfect but at a reasonable price - I've not been doing it long and still...

    The T.A ....

    Anyone know much about joining the T.A. and being in it? Frankly, I don't like reading the army's "bumf" about joining up, it's all a bit too "join the army - it's great" I'm a lorry driver, class2, I got my license about a year ago but work's been pretty slow and it just seems to be getting...

    inginuity forthe forthcoming midlands meet!

    Well, most woods have got them, a corner which seems to have collected junk over the years or (as in this case) the remains of some sort of dwelling long since reclaimed by the trees. It's been bothering me a little that ground fires aren't really allowed at the meet, (you can have them at a...
