What to wear in an open canoe in Canada

I dont think you stand much chance of falling out of the canoe, unless you're VERY inexperienced. I would suggest simple nylon running shorts. I would be far more concerned with the mosquitoes in Canada than anything else. Legend has it they have carried away unwary travelers!!! I dont know the...

    Beanie

The US army issued them as watch caps. Yes, they itch. Yes, they are warm. I still have mine, 20 something years later.

    Edinburgh

I honeymooned there a couple years ago. Definitely the Whisky Experience, if thats your thing. And, if you get the opportunity, stroll down the Princes Street Garden. Gorgeous area!

The best kit from each army in your opinion

14 years in the US Army as an infantryman, the two best pieces of gear either issued, or bought, are the poncho and poncho liner. Many, many nights, those have been my shelter.

    Survival kit in a tube

This is a pretty neat idea for a small ditch kit on snowmobiles. A little pricey, but they are easily stored out of the way.

Did some work for a judge

You must share a dram with him. Then, he still owes you. And, I think its illegal to drink a good scotch alone. If its not, it should be-its certainly immoral to! :)

The 'I hate Trangia cookers' thread, a thread for Trangia haters.

I've given up on alcohol stoves in general. I am a complete convert to a gasifer stove, using almost exclusively my solo stove. With a handful of sticks, I can boil water. No worries about fuel. The only other stove I possess is a Svea 123R, which is used canoe tripping and car camping. It is...

    washing up

I honestly use a handful of dirt, with pine needles/forest duff, to scrub everything out. Then, rinse with water, and a little Dr Bonners that I keep in a tiny squeeze tube. I've never had an issue.

Food for a week in a PLCE Side Pocket - Paul Kirtley

They did a pretty extensive study on caloric intake on thru hikers on the AT and the PCT, and found that, on average, the hikers are burning between 5 & 6500 calories a day-some up to 10,000. There's simply no way to pack that much food for a week burning that kind of calories. And, many, on...

    Uninvited Guests

Black bears-at least here in New England-can get up to 300 lbs. Mind you, that's 300 lbs of animal, not cushy, soft human :). We're starting to have an issue with them here, getting into suburban areas, due to encroachment. And, that people who don't normally have contact with wild animals leave...

    Tent for the lower Himalayas

Here in the US, that would be considered a toy, suitable for kids sleeping in the backyard. If you plan on living out of it for a week, that's likely not what it will hold up to. Its trash, just waiting to happen. Buy once, cry once. This tent, you'd be crying every night, my guess.

Get your beards out for the girls

Kilts & beards, you say? My wedding day, last October (with my beautiful bride): And, me, with my nephew, the night before, enjoying a pint (he had just returned from Afghanistan the month prior, so it was a dual celebration):

WTT: ATS R.A.I.D. pack for Berghaus Munro

Greetings friends across the water! I'm interested in picking up a Berghaus Munro pack for a day pack. I have an ATS RAID pack (the original one, not the RAID II) that I'm willing to swap even for. This pack has been with me a few years, but shows little wear and tear. Its in great condition...
