just a reminder, if anyone wants to buy sell or trade anything at the Dec meet, post it up in the regulars forum :)

went down to North Wood for a stroll recently amazing how its changed so quickly yet again, full of autumnal colours and open spaces now the understory is shedding its foliage. this new vista bought to the fore the abundance of dead or windblown branches, so to help keep our camping areas clear and clean I propose to lift fire restrictions for this meet. this doesn't mean you can fell dead standing, that needs to be kept upright and dry for future use, there is ample firewood on the ground.

im hoping to be able to use the lower south end of the wood again if the track holds, this is something I will assess towards the end of the week, keep your eye on the posts. :)

projects,

had a word with Gordon yesterday with the proposed intention of building a viewing platform using one or more trees, he is absolutely fine with this. I explained I would use the timber from one of our clearance projects, this would take the form of in the round green poles. nothing elaborate or fancy with minimal impact hence naturally sourced materials not commercially processed timber.

this is something that will take shape over several meets or I might just wander down whenever I have the time, and any help will be most welcome. :)

along similar lines, some of you may have noticed a hide set up on the grassed SSSI, this is used by a chap conducting a long term vigil of the local fauna. he has recently installed a couple of owl boxes around the wood too. where possible can we leave these areas undisturbed? while were talking of this area, Gordon has asked if we could trim the access onto the wooden bridge this meet as its a bit overgrown, once again entirely voluntary but any help would be appreciated. :)

Ohhh, some lovely workparties in the offing then, plenty of opportunities to keep warm! That path hedgerow grows like stink, doesn't it?

A veiwing platform sounds amazing, do you know whereabouts you'd like it in the woods? Could it combine with a communal or would that be self defeating by bringing humanity where you want to observe fauna?? It'll be really interesting to hear and see how this will be achieved structurally :)

...not sure on location yet possibly the lower end..
I bet we'll get confirmation in a bit... I was in the area today and though it was dryish, branches are down all over the place :)

...will have a scout around on Saturday....
Would it help if I brought twin core 1cm polyprop rope, got quite a few metres but its slippery old stuff :) My passengers have chickened out of a lift with me... I dunno, folk pay for rides like that at Alton Towers ;)... so we'll all see you up there seperately. If you want me to move the fire/ kettle/ communal tarp up northside if you decide you want us up there, I can do it on my jack jones, I've packed a pick axe and shovel if you want it recessing :)

Still not excited at ALL.

thanks Sal for the clarification :)

meet location

spoke to the farmer today after the area had been lashed with wind and rain, as I suspected the track down to CP3 is too soggy to use the lower wood, apart from that I have concerns that the high winds have probably made the lower end unsafe with hung ash branches and the possibility of more wind. so, top end it is then! hopefully we can park at CP2 without too much hassle.

could a couple of the early birds possibly retrieve the chute and firepit and kettle from the other end please? I will be there after work around 1730 ish :)

The storm sirens have just gone off here, so may be delayed.
Blimney lovey, batten down the hatches and stay safe!

I bet you'll get in before me, Martin, so I'll come pick you up and we'll collect the fire etc in the lanny if you think that'd be ok Steve??

I hope to be there about 1pm Martin :)

Steve should we recess it and would you like the rope I mentioned?? Prob not the weather for lookout building though, I bet we'll have our work cut out just stabilising windblowns though!
