I am wanting to make some walking sticks, probably from Hazel. How long do I need to give after cutting for them to be able to be used. Do I need to seal the ends after cutting or just use linseed

Advice may vary but about 12 months in a cool dry place. seal the ends with wax while drying.

Google stickmaking and you find some interesting stuff.

dont trim any side branche's off too close, wait until they are dry for that
dry them in a place where they rest on something flat so they wont bend EG supported up in a shed roof
they need to have plenty of air, I find hazel gans mouldy quite easily if it gets too fuggy
Or bundle them around a straight 3x2 with rope to keep them straight as they dry
be patient let hem dry at least for a year

i do a few hazel sticks, and for drying as for any sticks i use, its 12 months per inch thickness, and i usually melt a candle and dip each end of the stick in to seal. always cut longer than you need. hope this helps....mack
