Windproof smock

Am looking for a windproof smock for running and orienteering. It needs to be wind proof, shower proof, light weight, and durable.

Ideally something OD or black, but not Camo.

Any suggestions?

I use Montane on my bike. Their ultra lightweight smock won't keep out all of the rain but it packs into a tiny space and does a pretty good job of protecting you when you're active.

Have a look at a Bergans Morgedal, I can't fault mine and the Epic cotton does (for me) precisely what they claim for it.

That Bergans Morgedal looks nice, but it's 7 times the weight of the Montane, and doesn't really meet with the "lightweight" requirement.

I have a Survival Aids single ventile wind proof top which weighs 440g. I reckon that is about as light as ventile can go. Is it too heavy? Suppose it is by modern synthetic standards. Very breathable though and deals with showers well.

Might be considered a little old fashioned these days but tough as nails, light and long lasting my old buffalo is still going after a quarter of a century (in someone elses hands now I kind of grew out of it eventually (sideways). But the Buffalo Windshirt is a great piece of kit.

For windproof tops i've had the featherlite smock and found i tended to overheat even with the zip fully down.

I gave it away and bought a Lite-Speed Jacket, not only do i find it more useful as i can vent from the front zip better, it also has a hood so is better for light rain or when it's blowing a gale on the mountain tops.

It's a bit heavier at 166g (my large is 189g inc stuff sack) but i do find it more useful over more conditions than the smock.


Should also say that it's pretty useless in anything but the mildest downpour.
Tried 2 different DWR products but still it tends to wet out on anything but mild drizzle.

Doesn't leak so much as the pores block so it becomes less and less breathable.

That is on my list of options.

This is something I want for running/orienteering, it has to keep me warm from the wind while running for about an hour or so (longer if I get lost). If it's raining while I'm running, as long as I can keep the wind off, I doubt I'll notice in the UK heat. Once I've finished I can change into something heavier, more waterproof, and dry. Like a car...

Me and you have very similar wanted lists I think Julia lol, this one gets good reviews and is cheaper than the montane, also the figments are a bit better if your not a racing snake lol

If your happy to pay for Ventile - A Firemore Glenmore Smock is a really good option mine is brilliant: http://firemore.com/garments/05_mt.html

If you want something a bit lighter I agree with Goatboy & would get a Buffalo Windshirt. The Montane is very light but not as durable IMO. I use mine for running but some of the elastic has gone as has the zip. Buffalo or Paramo are better options.

I own a buffalo Windshirt. Best as far as price compared to montane, good for long term use and hardwearing

I reckon I must be a kit junkie cos I have a Montane Featherlite, a Buffalo windshirt and a Paramo Fuera. Of the three the Montane is the lightest and stuffs the smallest into a pocket, the Paramo I think is the most weatherproof, but the Buffalo is the most versatile with the side vents and options for a hood.

Head down to TK Max Julia....I got a really nice breathable, showerproof, wind proof and very lightweight soft shell jacket for under 30 quid a few weeks ago...it's a karrimor one in bright orange though coz I got it for work and if I'm not in bright colours some tree monkey will no doubt drop a log on my head lol

Windproof, light and has pockets. Hilltrek also do a single ventile hooded smock which is heavier (750g) which I once owned and quite liked.
