But, I have lots of shells and some well shaped bottles...

They used to stick em on with linseed oil putty, yes?

And then varnish them? (How long does the putty take to dry?)

Too long. Plaster mixed with white glue is supposed to be quicker :dunno:

You could try one and see ? the pound stores sell cheap versions of all of them….how about white silicon though ? That would stick to the glass, and to the shells, yes/no ?

Like Mary says, cheapo mastic would be best. Pound shops sell it sometimes, but it's fairly cheap in builders supplies.

Putty with linseed oil in can take 6 weeks to a few months to cure and even then it never really fully cures for months/years. (family trade)
