The cheap ones are heavy and the light ones (MSR) are expensive. I just can't see a point in paying over 10 pounds for something that is already in your bin. And you can make it fit any stove/pot. Plus you won't care when it get all wrinkly and nasty over the years.

I think we are talking different things here - I'm talking about a hinged aluminium windshield with ground spikes - not a foil job

I couldn't agree more - foil windshields are the spawn of the devil! cumbersome, unwieldy and breakable.............I've got a six-section ally job that's been around since god was a boy, you don't know it's there 'till you need it, and then it works perfectly...................

These mean you can run on 99p gas rather than £4.99 gas!

The blaze should attach to these with no problem and all the other screw on stoves.

These stoves are dirt cheap, small, light and do the job well. Doesn't really matter if it gets lost or stolen either.

I use one with the fold out tripod converter for the cheap butane cylinders.

There should be another group buy soon for carbon felt which makes an excellent everlasting, light, fireproof, foldable windscreen. It can also be used to make an almost free tiny alcohol stove too.

They are very good those Midnitehound - although I find the bottom one better for gas lanterns than stoves as they are quite unstable stood on end!

This will run on panel wipe which is better for you than using petrol. You will need to have a spare pre-heat generator and a spanner on hand. I don't know how good the cheap Chinese copies are.

Gas is certainly faster, simpler and cleaner, can't complain at 99p for a butane cylinder really but you will need to go to a propane/butane mix for really cold weather.

Here is a multi-fuel stove that members on here have said does the job well, it is cheap and it will run liquid fuels but also on butane or butane/propane!!

Yes, I use the small converter cap for lamps or specifically a remote stove line. If you want to use it with a stove then you need to dig a hole in the ground or jam the can in between something. ;)

Mines been cracking iv had it I'd say 10 years and if only ever used petrol which has usually been sat for months and iv never had a singal problem, I rarely use it , maybe an average of one a month if that but everytime it works a treat, which suits me, no messing or ordering cartridges.
im sure at dome point il have to strip it

It seems the gas stove is certainly a great option, especially with the price of the fuel and the easy burner.

This is a great selection to choose from, and I've certainly learned a bit more about the equipment out there. I'd say I'm set to buy!

That's all you can hope for :)

You won't go far wrong with a cheap gas stove - even if you go petrol, kerosene or wood or meths in the future, we should all have a basic gas stove - simple, quick, good simmer control - great value.

Just for a bit more of a chilled, camping kettle I saw a nice one on TV the other day on BBC's 'Pilgrimage with Simon Reeve' - Simple wood burning kettle, but great for a static camp. Plus it's hard to not enjoy the appeal of using wood fuel.
