Ventile, despite some of it's problems is lovely stuff for the outdoors, soft comfortable and quiet, I would like another ventile jacket or smock, but hey, that stuff costs and I am invariably skint, which is what you get for being a student. So, it occured to me outdoor specialists are not the only users of this stuff, I am sure there is various uses with the military and other organisations that play in harsh weather, but where. Where may I source a used ventile garment, army surplus, whatever, but what to look for. Does anyone know a professional user garment that is ventile and is available on the second hand market, I seek names and descriptions. I know so far flight suits tend to be made out of it, as that is what it was developed for, keeping the wet out for a while when an aviator ditched in the sea.

I know my old technical college had single layer ventile smocks in a bright orange colour, it being an ex Merchant Navy college and I had cause to use one for a week and there fell in love with ventile.

Any other garments ?

Edited to add, the SAS windproof smocks advertised on ebay, are they of the stuff I seek ?

YES bud they are ,ventile, you have different types and grades of ventile from megga light weight, for shirts etc to heavy weight for tents ,etc,MAke sure you research an ARTIC VERSION OF a sas smock as with this you have the toop grade ventile both windproof, any waterproof,as the special weave in these garments swell on impact with water thus preventing the passing.hope this helps cappi

"Gaberdine" haven't heard of that for ages. Apparantly its basingstokes (my origional home towns) only real claim to fame. It was invented by thomas Burbury in 1888 (also blamed for chavs) he was in the pub one day when he noticed the shepereds who frequented ye old red lion had waterproof coats. Upon further investigation he established they had gained this waterproof quality from cuddlin their sheep to keep warm on cold & lonely nights. The wool from the sheep secreted an oily substance on the coats making them repel water.

I may be a little off topic and I may have had a few large glasses of wine but I understand there is truth in this story.
