I don't need one, I'd only probably use it a handful of times a year. But. I want one.

Now I've seen an unissued one at a store for £100 (silver).

Firstly. Is £100 a good price for basically a new one, in mint condition?

Secondly. How much better are these than say a Coleman petrol lantern from go outdoors, or a tilley? I've heard good things about timely, but better things about vapalux.

Any advice will be appreciated as always, mainly the price aspect. As tomorrow I'll probably be at the shop buying one or the other.

Steve.

i'm leaning towards the vapalux, mainly interested in the price. I need one for the weekend, so cant rely on ebay for delivery, i know i'm paying a premium picking it up in person, but it allows me to examine it.

Blackfeather has a new one (m320) or he did the other day... he sells and trades stuff. He's based in Wakefield. I've just sent him a text, i'll let ya know what he says Steve :)

Good lanterns are Vapalux. Made in halifax too, or were.. The Coleman petrol ones are brighter but dont burn as long on a single tank

Coleman petrol lanterns are really good, but a Vapalux has far more soul! They really are great. Never been impressed by Tilley or Petromax for that matter. Probably been unlucky. £100 is a bit steep 'though.

I'm a fully signed up coleman man but a few things about them. The steel they use is a bit rust prone over long periods so don't leave them sat on a damp wooden shelf in the shed like lots of people do. Also no way does a tank lask the advertised 13 hours, I get about 8 hours or so from a tank, I could turn it down more but then I find as pressure drops it sometimes goes out.

Having said that they are easy to light, fuel evaporates quickly so it doesnt leave things greasy, you only need one fuel and for me its readily available.

What fuel is easier / cheapest for you to get?

One other advantage of the vapalux etc is that the mantle is held top and bottom making it more robust. And they do look great.
