Firstly, welcome Gaz, have a great time here.
As to purifying field run off, our well water is our only source of water for the house. The water is pumped from the well chamber to a header tank in the attic, just like any other house. On its way it is filtered and treated in a UV capsule (as well as the filtration of the ground and sandstone walls of the chamber itself).

If you're talking about a smallish stream, it would make a lot of sense to know what has been on the land for the recent past, chemicals/fertilisers/stock etc. It is possible to use a filter and then boil it thouroughly, but there is no guarantee that it will eliminate some chemicals and it won't necessarily taste nice either.

There was a thread running a few days ago on whether water was safe to drink - have a search as there are many more qualified than me to answer your question.
